Image projection?
« on: January 13, 2008, 09:34:28 AM »
I've been looking for a new riding jacket. Found one that meets the requirements - looks good (to me), leather, armour, priced right, and a little colour for safety. Showed the pic the the teenaged sons. Instant reactions - #1 says "Ugly", #2 says  "That's dorky, you'd look like a 70s stuntman" :D
Not being particularly image or fashion conscious, that doesn't change much, but I would be interested to hear what associations I'm not aware of that this jacket has for other people. After all, since coming here I've learned that chaps are gay and beanie helmets project the implication of being intellectually challenged. Anybody? anything?

Looks OK to me, but I'm not particularly image or fashion conscious myself. Not sure how much stock I would put in the opinions of teenagers. ;D

Nice looking jacket. It has a classic cut, but so do our bikes.

Looks good to me.
Does have a 70's flavor to it--which is o.K.

Looks like a Harley Jacket to me..if you like and it is reasonable go for it..

Buy it and ride your bike.. after all nothing matters when you are riding. Its when you stop everyone not riding tells you what you should have..
Lthe Ducatistas that buy a touring Duc and then do 6 hr days!!.. LMFAO.. after telling me for years what I should have and that I cant ride like I did way back.

The jacket would look right on our old bikes like someone said..

I think some of the newer stuff looks dorky on an old bike..

Anything orange and black shouts "Harley" to me -well, but a KTM Superduke-

I ride with a modern jacket and helmet. I realized long ago that they don't match with a 70's bike, but I can't stand open face helmets anymore, and modern cordura jackets offer more confort and practicality than leather -though not the same protection- I have a black leather jacket too, classic looks, but it has only two small pockets so I only use it for short rides where I don't have to carry anything.

That's definitely a Harley orange look-alike...

I would not personally wear it due to my dislike of the corporate Harley scheme, but to each his own.  If you like it, then go tear up the streets in it  ;D

Of course you also need to remember that dressing for the ride and not for the fall is a sure way to get a hospital visit.  If it's heavy quality and durable enough (unlike MOST Harley gear I've encountered...), then once again go tear up the streets in it  ;D

We all know that teen-agers know nothing and their opinions are not worth listening to!!!  But then we were never teen-agers and progressed from childhood to maturity over just one night.
I like the jacket.

I agree with your son that it has that 70's stuntman look.

But that means I like it  ;D

I am not young and im not old but I think that jacket isnt bad.  I agree with old biker,  seems the new fad for high school boys is to wear girls jeans.  Now i know I wore some crazy cloths but cant say I ever wore girls jeans.  Just my 2 cents.

They will be looking at the back, or you will look at it on a hanger.
How much does the general public see as you whizz past anyway? I have always wondered. With the sorry state of folk paying attention to anything, people might even notice you are wearing a jacket.

That being said, if it is your style get it, fashion is the other persons problem. I like the see me feature of the jacket as well as the skin retention properties! Wear on!

If you can't stand the though of it getting ruined in an off-bike experience, then don't get the jacket.

Thankyou everyone for your observations. I had missed the Harley connection. I can live with that. What a great site!  Where else could I get the opinions of so many learned MC types?  Happy not to get something like  "isn't that the same jacket worn by the guy in the back row of the Village People?"
I was the sole bidder on the size 44 jacket auction late last night, so I got it for $64.99 plus shipping. Bonus - no logos. Also pushed the Buy it Now on a pair of black leather pants. I'll be a flashy colour coordinated dude on the orange/black 78F. Woo Hoo, now just 3 months til spring.
Again, thanks all for letting me know who I will be.  And DammitDan, when I see you again on the road next summer, there'll still be a big wave for you ;D            Dave

I wasn't gonna say anything till after you got suckered into buying it.

Since it is a 70's retro style, you should know, it's the same jacket worn by
on of those Village peoples.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ought to look real good with those black leather pants and matching bike too! ;) ;) ;) ;)
Just don't hang out in Toronto much ;) ;) ;)
