I'm not familiar with your bike, but at least with earlier 750's, the same key used for the ignition should fit the fork lock unless someone has made a modification. As for keys, try Hondakeys.com.

Thanks for the info. Frankly, I had a key broken off in my fork lock from the PO. When I finally got around to trying to remove it, removing the lock was so damn easy, you have to wonder just how much theft prevention it offered.

In addition to the weak steering lock, the later ignition lock was no prize either. I've had sooooo many '76, '77, '78 bikes with bad ignition switches, I've made up a hotwire switch and keep it in my tool box. Essentialy, I can replace the keyed ignition switch with a toggle switch in under a minute. Hmmm, I wonder where the next meeting of sohc4 bikes is, I could use a couple new ones. ;D
Speaking of which, how many people use wheel locks? And how many have forgotten they were locked and tried to ride off with the wheel locked? At my old house, I used to run a ten foot long chain thru the rear wheel, and padlock it to the fence post next to my driveway. I came home from work on a couple occasions to find the bike a couple feet from the fence, laying on it's side. >:(
And ss_cb400f, are you able to rebuild the bike on insurance company money? I know here, the amount my insurance co would pay after a theft and recovery wouldn't replace a tank badge. THATS a bummer.

I have to admit that I rarely do. I pulled the lock to remove the broken key more because it had bugged me forever. I was determined to get the thing out of there. I trided all sorts of methods to grasp what was left (not much) to no avail. Another SOHC/4 member suggested just removing the lock and I would be able to get the key out easily. Now, I thought the lock was somehow, virutally pemanently installed. Ha! A screwdriver and about 30 seconds had it off.

thanks for all the replys
the bike has good security at home (two german shepards) but if i have to leave it when i am out and about chain through wheel and if possible padlocked to something imovable but every bit helps especialy with the toerags which are about nowadays and as you say insurance dosent make anends for the old girl being violated. it does use a diferent key to the ignition lock another thing i intend to put on is break the kill switch wire and fit a hidden switch so it looks like i will have to just leave the stering lock alone or maybe drill out the barrel and see how it works

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

On my 1977 cb550k3 it locks by turning the wheel all the way either way, and then turning the key off, then you push the key in and turn it backwards.

Hi Bike54.
You have had a lot of replies and I hope this  may also be of some help.
The brass lock is keyed into the metal barrel that protrudes from the steering head. To lock the steering you turm the key which allows a pin to rotate within a slot machined in the bore of the barel and the whole brass part pushes inwards. There is a hardened steel pin about 8mm dia on the end of the brass barrel which locates in the stering stem to actually lock the steering.
The brass part will drill out as described bysupersport_CB400F, and a new lock obtained from www.davidsilverspares.co.uk Alls well so far, I did all this on my CB400F. The dificulty is locating the washer and pin which holds the brass barrel in place. I found out that some modern Hondas still have this type of lock and therefore the washer and pin are a current part. I have not got the part number but any Worthwhile  honda dealer will look it up. I used Lings of Harleston tel 01379 853213 or e mail Parts@lings.com When you get the washer and pin(bllind rivet) carfully but firmly bang it in. The rivet compresses and holds the whole lot together.
Best of luck, Roger.
