Which way do you install a front hub spacer?
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:43:27 PM »
On the 400F, I've got the bearings in the freezer ready to go.  I can't remember how the piece came out and all my manuals don't show enough detail to figure out which side is which.

One side has larger diameter "fingers".  Does it go to the brake side?  Also, if you're installing double-sealed bearings is there any need to grease anything inside the hub?  Thanks.

I've no knowledge of 400's but since nobody's answered, here's my .02 cents :)

On the 750 hub the smaller side of the spacer goes to the side of the hub with a flange for retaining the bearing (smaller dia. bore), the larger side goes to the straight thru bore.

Sealed bearings are that, sealed. So no grease comes out and no grease comes in, alas there's no sense in filling the hub with bearing grease.

Thanks for taking pity on me...it's hard to get excited about bearing spacers when there's a supercharged 500 a few lines up.

I spent the evening cleaning blasting media out of the bearing retainer threads and looked at it long enough to figure it out.  Like you said there is a smaller bore "shoulder" where the little end goes.  I'll let the bearings sit another day in the freezer and install them tomorrow.

I cleaned about a pound of grease from inside these hubs, so I figured there might be some need for it besides the bearings.  I guess they thought if a little is good a lot must be better.

that grease must have been a PO as honda never filled the hubs

Maybe it's used as a dampner. LOL
