Cam Degreeing 101

        I'm out in the garage testing out the degree wheel set-up. Most of what I've read so far covers the "degreeing" process, but not how to set up the measuring tools. I've taken pictures of how I understand it so far. Keep in mind that I've never done this before.

    The wire pointer turns with the engine while the degree wheel remains stationary, right? If that's the case then I haven't figured out how to mount the degree wheel so it remains stationary. Tape? :)

    I haven't installed the rocker arms yet, but the dial indicator will measure from the top of the rocker arm, right? Also, there are 22 different tips to choose from in three basic categories- pointy, rounded, and flat. The rocker arms have a flat shelf at the tip so I'm thinking I should use a small diameter "flat" tip, right?

Sean,

The way I have done it in the past is to have the degree wheel fastened to the crank with the pointer fastened on the motor.
You would be better talking to Mike via live chat or on the phone, but he has gone camping this week end with family.
Did you get a vairiable cam sprocket for it ?

Hey Sam,

      The sprocket should be here soon. This is just a dry run while I wait(and wait.....tap,tap,tap) :P

        Thanks for the tip. I should be able to mount the wheel, with a couple of washers, to the shaft where my pointer is now. Makes sense. The pointer can go almost anywhere as long as it points to "0". Back to the garage......

  Like Sam said, mount the pointer to the engine(clutch cover bolt hole etc). Make sure you have enough length as you are going to have to bend it a bit. Eyeball the #4 piston to TDC and mount the wheel with "0"TDC at the top. Get #4 piston to TDC(use a screwdriver in the plug hole when near TDC and watch until it stops rising). Bend the pointer to 0 TDC on the wheel. That's close enough to start. Make sure you will not foul the pointer when timing and make sure the wheel is secure and doesn't move at this point. Your readings will be off #1 cylinder and the indicator tip will rest on the flat part of the retainer. You will be using 0 lash to when timing that cam.  I'll get that stuff out ASAP and I'll take some pics as I will be timing a Kawasaki engine- it should help. I'm going camping this Wednesday until Saturday so no SOHC Forum for me during the time.

BTW, the plate for the indicator holder looks good Sean. That wheel is good too as it is made for bikes-car wheels are different in how they are numbered for degrees of rotation.

Thanks guys,

    Second trip out to the garage and now I know the difference between a "bolt" and a "shaft". The instructions are on the degree wheel I just couldn't comprehend them for some reason. Oh well, at these prices I am willing to look like a bufoon :D As long as I get it right.

    Thanks for the screwdriver tip, Mike. That'll give me something to play around with today. I've read about the 0 lash and it makes sense that this is the best way to start measuring, so thanks for that too.

In reading this again I see that it may imply impatience towards the shipper of parts, and not a jab at my own "obsessive" nature as it was intended. Hope this clears it.

I hope you get it dinoed when its done as its the same spec as the one we are having built.
Ours wont be ready till next year, its the cost thingy.

       Geez, I was all ready to close this engine up before you guys talked me in to degreeing the cam. Now you want me to have it Dyno'ed ;) Absolutely. Consider it done, provided the engine runs at all when I'm done with it. It'd be fun to compare notes.

       Speaking of notes....I bit the bullet and bought a new Kerker from my buddy at Hayasa Motorbikes in Oakland. He's going to give me a "screamin" deal. What kind of exhaust will you be running,Sam?

Sean,

To get the bike dynoed is not that expensive and its the best way to get the mixture spot on as you will have to jet up to fill the extra 100ccs, and it will tell you where the bikes power comes in and where it stops.

Our bike runs 4 into 4 open megaphones, breathes through 31 CRs and is sparked by a Boyer ignition system.

There is a pic in tech forum, page 10, under 836 big bore and oil leaks page 4.

The bikes not mine Sean, I just got to build it, maintain it, house it, drive it around to meets, but I do get the odd ride in my white poseing gear. ::)

Sam's bike sure does look nice. I hope priority mail gets that to you by Thursday....Friday at the latest Sean.Like I said I'll be home Saturday if you need support.

     Geez Sam. Sounds like you get to do all the fun stuff and let someone else sweat the finances. I have GOT to get me a sponsor. Hook a brother up, wouldja? ;D

       I totally dig the white leathers. I'm thinking of getting some "period" gear for when I take the new bike tear-assing around the hills. You know, something that really says "1978". Something.....DISCO!

       Thanks for the progress report, Mike. This weeks pretty tied up so even if it gets here Sat. that'll be fine.
