Triple Tree Stem Length, 80' CB750K vs 83' VT750C?
« on: January 20, 2008, 11:39:39 AM »

Was going to swap stems between the VT750C and my 77' CB550K, to use the VT's forks on my 550. Then, I got to wondering, that since I'm going to pull the sidecar on of the 80' CB750 and put it on the 77'CB750A,the VT's forks just might bolt right on the 80' 750 without modification. What I like about the VT's forks are: Built-in fork brace, 39mm tubes, dual calipers and air assist on the tubes. Anyone know about this? ???

                                      Later on,Bill :) ;)

BTW, Here's a picture of the VT750C front end.

Bill, I just swapped an 85 vf700f with a78 cb750. I know this is not a direct answer to your question, BUT pressing the stems out was not too much trouble and made bolting up the donor front end fairly easy. as far as sizes I am not much help but the two I did were the same diameters just different lengths.

Appreciate your reply. ;) I figure that it should be the same size, like you said. That was the same as the 550 also. The VT's stem was a bit longer than the 550's but I thought that the 80' CB750 might accidentally be the same length. I just hate to pull the forks off of the CB750 just to find out. If there's anybody who knows the length of the stem of the 80' CB750K triple tree, I could then compare that to the VT750C stem length.

I believe a good number of them are the same diameter, the length is where it is different a lot of times. I can't seem to get the list of fork tubes and bearing sizes on ohiocaferacers.com lately so I can get some info off of that.

Please do bill...Because as has been pointed out the CB750 and the VF750 have the same size stems...I may look more into the idea of doing a VF front fork swap to reaper yet..Had i known this when i still had the K4 i would have gladly done a VF fork swap then...air forks..dual disks..anti dive? hell yea! Means im either getting a new swing arm fabbed up or im modding the VF swing arm to fit the 550 chassis..eh..machine work either way lol..

I think the diameter's the same on about everything from the CB450DOHC (maybe even the CB/CL/SL 350s also) to include the 500, 550 & 750 (& maybe the CB900 & CB1000?). Maybe others, not sure. Can anyone get on the ohiocaferacers.com site and get the list to come up? The bearing sizes are listed there and would tell the stem diameter but not the length of the stem.

Both the CB550 and the CB750 are grouped in the section of the chart marked

Upper 26x48.5x15.2
lower 30x50x14.4...

So with that said..I should theoretically be able to take the VF triple and the CB550 triple and simply swap stems and be able to use the VF forks on the CB550. So i guess i just gotta look into swaping the rear swing arm now as well..

Bill you have a pm in your box either way not linked to this incase the pm notifications arent working lol. Sorry for the Hijack

Unfortunitly going by that chart...No your VT forks will not work on your 750 bill....The VT is in the same listing as the CB550 CB750 K and VF750. So you could use them for your original plan of using them on one of your CB550s. Which twin was it you were thinking of using the VT forks on before bill?

Thanks for the input Chris. I was going to use the VT front end for the 77' CB550K and then was thinking about the 80' CB750K, if it would work. Kind of puzzling as to why the VT would work on the 550 & 750 and not on the 80' 750 though. The 77' CB750A and the maligned 79' CB750K that I had picked up from my Dad, had had their forks swapped by my Dad. And they seemed to fit okay. Unless the 750A forks are different from the other SOHC750s and that doesn't seem likely (to me, anyway). What were the numbers for the 80' CB750K and the 83' VT750Cs? could be that the outside measurement was different and THAT wouldn't keep me from using the VT forks. I could just use the 80' CB750s bearings. Get what I'm saying?

Yeah, I got your PM, didn't have time to respond right then. Already taken care of by now though. :)

The 83 VT750 C is exactly the same as the CB550 and the 78 and older CB750s. Hence why i said you could use them on your 550 with a stem swap if needed. The 1980 CB750 is....Upper 26x47x15 and lower 30x55x17

However on the flipside you could always use the forks off of a CBR 600 Hurricane if you wanted bill lol..

Okay, what I need to know is, in the case of the numbers:

26x47x15, what are the numbers representing? By that I mean 26 indicates what? 47 indicates what? And 15 indicates what? If 26 is the inside diameter of the upper bearing race and if 30 is the inside diameter of the lower bearing race, then I have no problem. I'd be able to use the VT front end on the 80' CB750K and only have to deal with the stem length issue. Do you see what I'm saying? It mainly means that I need to know what each of those numbers (??X??x??) represent.

Logically the 26 would be the inner dia the 47 would be the outer dameter and the 15 would be the total height of the bearing

Thats how im reading it anyways..

So you may have to work with a bearing provider to mix and match some bearings like Fun Jimmy did on his CB550 to swap on his R6 front end.

Truth be told I originally complied the list of bearing sizes and fork diameters that is on the Ohio Cafe Racer site. I have it in excel if that is of use to anyone.

Japanese Bike Steering Stem Bearing Sizes
Helpful info when trying to decide if one front end will swap to another. One word of caution. Even though to models may use the same bearings it does not always mean a swap can be made. Steering stem length is also something to keep in mind. For example, the CB750 and CB450 use the same bearing but the CB450 stem is about 1" shorter.

Re: Triple Tree Stem Length, 80' CB750K vs 83' VT750C?
« Reply #16 on: January 22, 2008, 09:01:52 AM »
Stem length can also be easily fixed. Cut the stem in the middle, away from any bearing surface. Make, find, fab, whatever, a slug that will fit into the inner diameter with a nice fit. If you need to shorten the stem just figure out how much it needs to be and hack that length out. If it needs to be longer you will need to find something, maybe a chunk of another stem you have sitting around to take up the gap. Drill a few holes in the stem for welds and fit everything together. Measure, weld, and grind.

Does that make sense?

You know Kevin, now that I think about it, I knew you did that because it's come up before since I've been here. ::) I had completely forgotten. I appreciate your posting that list. On thing though, if the only problem might be the length of the stem, why couldn't you just grind the weld off, push the stem down as far as needed, cut off the excess on the lower side and weld it in place? Seems to me that it would be less work, less complicated and accomplish what you need.

If you did that you would probably lose your lower bearing surface. The bearing surface does not usually run all the way to the top even if both the top and bottom have the same size. It usually necks down to a smaller size.

Look at this one from a 750 for example. If you were to push it down further you would not have a spot for the bearing.

Kevin, I see what you are talking about. I guess that's why Greg (ohiocaferacer) swapped stems when he put the GSXR forks on a CB350 that he did. Now I better understand why Greg does it that way and why you came up with your way. I guess it's all a matter of preference. ;) Thanks for that explaination.
