Starter button
« on: January 18, 2008, 09:48:43 PM »
Any idea where I can get the little electric starter button without purchasing the entire switch assy. The little push button is gone. Starter still works if you put something in to push the inside piece. 75 Cb 550

My starter button desintegrated about a year ago. I replaced the button with one from radioshack.
The button is still working with no issues.
Here is the link to the thread I posted with pictures.

They are a generic part from any Jap bike. Mine is from a Kawi.

Did you just get one off a used bike or get a replacement from a dealer or web site?

Did you just put in a new hidden switch or use one to replace the button in the handlebar mounted switch?

If you replaced the one in the handlebar switch can you give me an idea of the part # from ALLELECTRONICS.COM?

Does any one know if this part, ie just the botton, is a part I can get from the dealer?

If the 75 has the headlight on all the time and it goes out when you press the starter the button can not be got on its own you have to but the complete switch, the button on its own is for the earlier bikes and it works like the horn button (same part number) that grounds to the bars

If you are just talking about the little plastic button and not the entire switch.

I have a 1976 CB750 K6. I got the bike in a non running state and I am still working on getting it running. Just and FYI to all.

I am looking to replace just the little plastic button not the entire switch. As far as I know the rest of the switch works fine it is just missing the little plastic button. It has a separate switch for hi / low for the headlight and horn on the left side.

Good luck but I think Bryan J got it right. On my K0 I used a horn button, contact and spring on my 75F I had to buy the entire control. Take it apart, it will most likely be in pieces. I temp wired a starter button until the new part came in. A little tricky but can be done.

Don't assume the rest of the switch is OK.
The headlight power does go through this switch, turning it off (presumably to reduce power draw) when starting. The internal parts on original switches have generally disintegrated, and the likely reason for the missing button is that a PO opened the switch pod to see why the switch wasn't working... whereupon parts whizzed around the room. Bypassing the headlight defeat is easy, and the bike runs fine without electric start. There are many SOHC4 bikes running like that!

Until I get the thing running I am not assuming that anything on the bike works or is OK. It has been sitting since 1986. The guy I got it from said the button broke on him but was working it happened. I have been looking at right switches on ebay. Maybe I can "harvest" the button off the horn and use it on the starter. It seems like the left hand switch is REALLY hard to find intact.

Well wish me luck all this is my first bike and I am learning as I am going. Thank you all for your help. I may be just getting 6 of the buttons from parts n more and selling the other 5 on ebay.

If its a 76 the horn button IS NOT THE SAME the RH switch sterter button only comes with the complete switch as it works the solenoid different AND turns the headlamp OFF when starting
