suggestions for new bike
« on: January 19, 2008, 06:17:17 AM »
will be retiring next month and thinking about a new bike for a retirement gift
no crotch rockets
want footpegs below rider
no faring
basicly i want a brand new 750sohc, buy i know that won't happen
my bike runs fine ,but i want to travel on long trips and parts for a thirty year old bike are getting hard to find
plus with my wife on the back i worry about old age of the bike
so any suggestions ?

No fairing? I guess that disqualifies my fav choice, the FJ1300 which has to be the best all-around ride today.

I've been really tempted by one of these lately (Kawasaki Versys), its a 650, which is enough for me, and it looks pretty comfy, also it right around or under $7000.

Try to import one of the new cb750 k's that are suppose to be out over there in europe. But for two up touring I'd go for something a little bit bigger IMO, 900/1000 cc's min.

That 1100f is really shape but it's a solo bike and does have a small fairing. They won't make it/ sell it in the U.S. but the proto-type cb1100r is what I'd like or even the cb1300.

I concur, Goat.  Guzzi Griso would be it for me.  Or a K1200S if I went Bavarian.

Both very fine examples!

Still wish they made a MotoGuz Eldorado with modern tech!

Here's your modern-tech Eldo;

I'd also recommend the Breva 750

Slightly used Kawasaki W650 is a terrific bike

Used Beemer from the 1980s. Plenty of low mileage examples (i don't like BMW past '95 or so).
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I like the Breva 750, the shaft drive does it for me.  I have been eyeing the Versys too.  The simplicity and torque of a twin appeal to me.

If your thinking Breva you better think 1100 or bigger for good two up touring, and for that kind of money you can probably do better than MotoGuzzi, IMO. I'm not crazy about the looksand it looks top heavy and the cylinders look like they would get in the way!!!

I know Guzzi owners luv their bikes but like a BMW, they feel really bizarre in every possible way compared tp a Jap inline 4. The torque reaction from blipping the throttle, strange controls, different ergos. And shifting and clutch feel not snick-snick.

My brother in law has a 1970 Moto Guzzi Ambassador police model...

Says it's the most comfortable cruising bike he's ever owned.  Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman both have a few, and they seem to enjoy them enough ;)

And sure a Guzzi's handling takes some getting used to, but what bike's handling DOESN'T take getting used to?
