75 cb550 airbox cover
« on: January 27, 2008, 05:19:14 PM »
Could somebody shoot me a picture of under the seat of a cb550k. I want to see the cover that is screened and goes over the air filter. I believe it also holds the tool kit.
I am missing mine and trying to see what it looks like.  Thanks in advance.

I'm missing mine too.  Is there a reason for removing and not replacing these?

None that I can think of , other than P.O.'s neglect. I'd guess you can run without it as long as you run a properly installed air filter.

The toolkit goes under the seat in the rear--there's two wing nuts that hold a plastic panel on the seat itself. Undo the wing nuts and there's a small compartment big enough for a little tool roll (which the bike came with, but some bikes have lost these during the passage of time)....

This is only true for the F model 550s and 77-78K models.  All other K models had the tool tray and filter box cover.

Theoretically, removing the tray reduces the inlet restriction to the air filter.  However, rain water and bike washing water can then ingress into the filter.  If it is a paper filter, it begins to break down and become more restrictive, requiring replacement.

Thanks! I would still love to see a picture of what it is. My manual (Clymer) doesn't show it and the fiche is tough to see.

drackett,
Would you mind posting a few pictures of the inside of the box.  I am new to this forum and to my 1974 CB550K (as I bought it on the first of the month).  It came pretty complete overall but when it comes the air filter and box it is missing everything but the lower plastic box.  I found a filter through Cycle Re Cycle 2, but I am just curious what else was in the box.  Thanks

There is a funny shaped spring that holds the air filter against the front of the box - another bit that seems to be frequently missing.

Anything else.  I can see on the fiche that there is something for the fuel return line in the bottom of the box.  (a few layers of something, maybe?)  If anyone has a picture, that would be great!
