handlebar clamp, which way round?
« on: January 20, 2008, 09:55:38 AM »
just been replacing the standard bars on my 400f. When I removed the clamps each one had dot punched in against one of the bolt holes, unfortunately they didn't match, one against top hole one against bottom hole, which way is correct.

There should be a gap at the rear of the clamp.  Take the top half and place on a flat surface (like glass) one end may be shorter than the other.  That one goes to the rear.  Alternately, the top triple may be ground to achieve this same objective.  With bars off, lay a straight edge across the flats.  You may find the forward flat in a higher plane than the rear.  Align the cap with the lower so the natural gap is toward the rear.  Tighten the forward bolt first, the the rear.

I also have a small gap on the rear/tank side of the two clamps.

thanks for that I will check the unequal height thing, unfortunately the clamps and yoke appear to be powder coated so this maybe tricky. The previous owner may have used the punch mark as a reminder then, pity they chose to fit them opposites.
