intake boots

my 73 750 intake boots will NOT fit the 78 carbs I aquired.  will 78 boots fit my 73 head?

       The '78 carbs are about 1/16" larger in diameter on both the air intake and engine sides. You can fit '78 boots to a '73 head but it is a loose fit (I used hose clamps to tighten them up so they didn't have leaks). I don't think you'll be able to use the '73 airbox as the air "trumpets" might be too small to fit the carbs. Aftermarket pod filters for 77-78 carbs are an option. Also, I don't think the '73 triple tree has a place to mount the choke cable so that will have to be sorted out. I ran '78 carbs on a '74 head with no problems, though it was a '78 bike so I had a place to mount the choke.

       I'm refering to '78 F model carbs. Not sure what dimensions the '78 K carbs are

at this point I'm confused.
one side of people says  late model carbs are the way to go, one side says they are #$%* (run early ones)
one side says 78 boots will not fit, the other side says they will fit
 ??? ???

Well for the fit, there IS a difference. It will either be a tight or loose fit depending which way you go.

As for which carb bank is better, I think that is all just preference. ANY change you can make on the earlier carbs, you can make on the newer carbs, you just have to monkey around. I myselft prefer the 78 carbs. I think they are more "bulletproof" The floats are better cause they are a fiber, not brass. 

But again it mostly comes down to user preference.

the 78 carbs I have have a accelarator pump.looks like that would be a bonus.
I could NOT get the 73 boots on carbs, so I'd have to go with a loose fit on head.
that sould like the way to go? at another site a guy just offered me a set of early carbs. now I'm unsure again

Well the accel pump is used to squirt fuel in the carbs when acceling from idle.

This other site that you can get the carbs from, I would guess he is charging something for them and if it is not too expensive, get it. Then you can try both and see what you like.

I will say one thing, ok 2 things. The 78 carbs are harder to get parts for, but NOT impossible. Second, either set can be worth money if you get rid of one.

Last thing, for the boots that are loose, you can get rubber orings that will fit over the openings and will reduce the gap which will make it easier to tighten up. Just becareful of leaks as always.

Seems like the mid range (year) carbs are easiest to tune vis-avis needle clip position, main jet, and idle screw.

My .02 anyway

as much as i hate my 77k carbs, they really arent that bad.  I like the fact that they are one complete unit, and cant practicaly be used seperate.  The throttle shaft mech and stuff is all internal which keeps them cleaner.  they seem to maintain the few settings that you can set on them and once you set the floats right, they dont leak a drop. 

just an opinion *shrugs*

i had a set of 78's, but they were a bastard to adjust, and you couldnt just flip the bowls off when you wanted to clean out a bleed air jet, so went back to the original carbs.... though mine originals had foam(fibre) floats... yes ok the other carbs had an accellerator pump, but that was out weighed with user unfriendliness... thats my 50c..peace

I have a 77 K7.  I put carbs from a K5 on it and it pulled a lot harder the originals.  If fact it made me convert to a twin front disk setup!
