13 hours left... what do you think?
« on: January 23, 2008, 06:07:13 AM »
So I came across this "Handmade Cafe Tank" on eBay. I asked the seller if it was made for a specific bike in mind and he said it was for a "CB750" (He didn't say what year). The current bid isn't too bad at $170, but I don't know if I like the looks or not. What do you all think?

I don't do business with a seller having a rating lower than body temperature.  Looking at their feedback, this person rarely sells...

The tank looks familliar, but I'm not sure from where.

Aesthetics aside, that underside photo has me wondering if it'll really fit an SOHC CB750. Seems like the two smaller frame tubes that run alongside the main upper frame tube would hit the inner sides of the tunnel on that tank. I could be wrong of course.

Looks kinda like a BCR tank, only ugly.  ;)

It looks kind of like the gas tanks I have seen on a website called www.unityequipe.com???

Maybe close... Definitely cheaper than the website..

I'd really think twice about this one. His feedback is not good, the looks are iffy to you!!, your not sure if it will fit. Would be a nice shelf piece tho  ??? if it won't fit/work. Cheap isn't always cheap!!

Doesn´t look right in any way to me.

Doesn´t look like it was made for a cb750 at all.

Doesn´t look like it´s made from aluminium as it has rust (!) on it (see pic). Probably mild steel...
Not that a steel tank is bad, but why list it as an "alloy tank"??

He says it´s new and has no leaks - then why does it need a sealer?

I´d save my money for something better  :)

Cheers
Dan

Its mild steel
He dosent know the difference between an alloy (anything other than steel)
look at the welds on the bottom of the tank. The color is not that of an alloy
not a very good weld job either

Maybe a DOHC 750? Who knows. It ended at $168, which didn't meat the reserve.

I also found this tank on ebay:
eBay Motors: Benelli Ducati Honda 350 Vintage Racer Cafe Tank NOS

But I think it would be a little too small for a 750. (I asked the seller and it has a 1.8 US Gallon capacity.) Cool looking tank, thought. And he shows a couple of Honda's with these tanks on them (twins, though).

If you guys are looking for Alloy CR tanks you need to check out Greg's work at Ohio Cafe Racers.  This is from his website:

OCR CB350 Alloy GP Gas Tanks
For all 1969-1972 Honda CB/CL/SL 350 twin cyclinder bikes. Also can order tanks to fit the CB350F and CB400F bikes.....and can special fit our tanks to the CB/CL 450's.

* All alloy 4043 aluminum construction
* Hand hammered to replicate the alloy race tanks used by the Honda factory race teams of the 1960s
* Polished alloy Monza caps
* Fits to factory frame mounts
* Ultra lightweight, for racing or cafe racers
* OCR Alloy Tank Capacity: 3.7 US Gallons(Stock Steel tank capacity is 3.2 US gal)

He is going to start offering CR 750 tanks as well as the CB 360 tanks.  Shoot him an e-mail, the tanks are awesome, super light and cheap by alloy tanks standards.  Plus Greg is a stand up guy!  While I am his friend I do not get a cut of anything, just dig his work (wish I had that talent, he is teaching me how to weld, Aluminum Sucks to weld!).  If he would have been making the CR 750 tanks a year ago, I would have got it instead of the BCR Kit (don't get me wrong I love Benji's work too, top shelf also).  Greg's tanks are far more superior to the one offered on e-bay earlier in this thread.  Just my 2 cents....

Steels are alloys as well.. just not reffered to as such as often as aluminum.

That tank was sort of looking like for a parralel  twin to me..

The yellow/green Benelli tank.. basically if it is made for a single tube frame , it will be tough to get it on a CB 750.. mst tanks are.. but not the biggest mod .. but work..
