Concrete Laundry Tubs
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:25:38 PM »
Getting ready to tackle an overdue home project. Replace the laundry tub and do some re-plumbing. The old laundry tub (double >:() is concrete, house is 65 yrs old. The only way I will get it out is break it up. Can anyone tell me if it is reinforced in some way (i.e. thin rods, mesh, etc.)? Just want to have everything I need handy when I start.

And a BFH.

I'd expect it'd be reinforced & if it's not feel a little lucky.

Why do you want to get rid of it.. Some people would kill to have one of those...

Come and get it Dan, it's all yours. ;D

Too big, have limited space in the laundry area after we refinished half the basement and I want to rearrange things slightly.

Chances are it is simply cast concrete with no metal. It is probably brittle, so if you whack it in the right spots you can get big chunks out of it. Try to crack it in half first.

Youngster!

I'll bet that if you could get it out in one piece, set it on the curb, and it will be gone by the next morning!

Getting one of those out of the basement in one piece is a hernia waiting to happen, I suggest smashing it over a tarp, that way way if you inner hatchet murderer overtakes you it's much easier to clean up.

Is yours floor mounted or wall mounted?
Many sinks fit onto posts or heads with a wedged slot, if mounted to a wall.  Usually gravity and the friction of the wedged slot is all that keeps it there.
If wall mounted, jack it off the moorings from under and near the wall.  Cushion with a woodblock.  Once it is raised clear of the wedge slot, it should come off quickly.  Remove hook ups first, of course.

I don't understand why breaking it up is the best approach.  Sounds pretty messy and amature-ish.

Of course, many situations are unique.  I haven't seen yours, so who knows?

It's free standing and sits on a steel frame. Trust me, breaking it up is about the only way. I must weigh in excess of 200# easily, is long, tight corners and turns and a steep flight of stairs. Really no point in trying to salvage it anyway, they have been code violations here in Ann Arbor for a good many years.

I reckon some o' them furriners jest aint familiar with good ol' Yankee plumbing. It's a concrete box about the size of a short fat guy's coffin, usually divided in two. Weighs about as much as a Buick.

Getting it out in one piece would be a neat trick... maybe the basement has a big picture window?

Ours was right by the back door... getting it from there to the driveway 10 feet away was hell.

I suspect Brits are smart enough not to have basements.
We didn't have basements in SE NC either, if you did it just let the
swamp in. ;)

Took me a while to figure out what a concrete laundry tub was to. ;D ;D

Already have one... sorry.

Since it's a code violation and you're pressed for space, that's good enough justification for me...

Need a hand? (you could give 1-800-GOT-JUNK a call. A buddy had them remove a steel bathtub from his old house and they took care of everything. I doubt your garbage collectors will haul it away, will they?)

Hmm, might consider 1-800-Got-Junk, it appeals to the "lazy" in me. ;D Garbage would take it if I fed it in pieces into the trash bin. They use automated trucks now, but there is a 200# or so total weight limit.

If you get it out in one piece, you won't have to pay to dispose it.  I'm tellin' you code violation or not, somebody will kill for it.

Wouldn't hurt to give them a call and see if they'd do it and what they'd charge.

Dealers here will give you $25 or $50 for it and get it out,
Take it to their shop and ask $150 to $200 for it.  And the rustier-looking, the better.

I know what you are on about now, we used to call them stone sinks.
I didn't realise it was an old thing...never saw any when I lived over there.
When I was a youngster we had one. We also had a coal fired boiler.
It was a brick built thing in a corner of the wash room with a brick stack going up the inside wall.
It had a big copper couldron set into it for boiling your whites.
Mum used to fill it with water then put paper and kindling wood under the boiler.
All she had to do then was rub two pieces of wood together for about 1 hour and the fire would be lit. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
