  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
Apparently these "people" protest at soldiers funerals and call them "Fags" because they consider them agents for a government that accepts gays? How come they haven't been shut down yet?  ???

A fundamentalist church whose members demonstrate at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and believe God hates gays will protest the Academy Awards and the funeral of Heath Ledger, because the actor played a gay cowboy in the 2005 film "Brokeback Mountain."

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., are trying to find out where the 28-year-old actor's funeral will be held and have already made signs to hold outside the Oscars that read "God Hates Fags and Fag Enablers," "Heath in Hell" and "Mourn for Your Sins," Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of the church's controversial founder Pastor Fred Phelps, told ABCNEWS.com.

Though Ledger was not gay, the church believes he "misused the giant megaphone given to him by God Almighty to speak the truth about fags," Phelps-Roper said, and instead "used his position of prominence to say God is a liar and that homosexuality is not an abomination."

The time and location of the Ledger's funeral remain unknown, but it is widely believed it will take place in the actor's native Australia.

George Amado, the general manager of New York City's Frank E. Campbell funeral home, told The Associated Press that funeral arrangements for the actor are complete and his relatives are expected to arrive in New York City Friday.

He refused to elaborate further, saying, "The family doesn't want us to give out any information."

"They are going to try and hide the body like a bunch of ghouls so we can't protest. The only thing in this country people worship more than filthy sex acts is the dead," Phelps-Roper said.

She said members of the church had already purchased plane tickets to picket outside the Oscars, scheduled for Feb. 24 in Hollywood.

A press release posted to the church's Web site, godhatesfags.com, reads: "Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there -- besides which, nothing else about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential."

According to the Web site, the church, founded in 1955, has held more than 34,000 protests. But Phelps-Roper said there are currently only 50 members.

Hate Group, or Religious Freedom?

The Southern Poverty Law Center considers the church a hate group because of its "platform, writings and statements by its leader, which are egregiously anti-gay," said Mark Potok, director of the center's Intelligence Project.
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

They are really stupid. They know only one thing and that is what fred has told them. We should give them their own little island as they are going to inbreed anyways cause no one in their right mind would date any one from that "church".

Bob's got it though, the patriot guard. They act as a shield against these "people".

Despite my attempts to not hate any one person or group,  these "people" truly earn my hatred more than the KKK, or any fascist group.

While I'm not into the mainstream religion thing, The bible, AND 10 commandments say to love thy neighbor,  and that god loves ALL his children,  which I take to mean any sexuality, race, or other diverse thing that makes one different from another.

They get me so heated with their ignorant beliefs about the gay community.    a gay person is no less a person than any other human on earth, and in my eyes, worthy of the same respect given to everyone else.

I'm going to shut up now before I get into colorful explitves that I'm positive will offend people.

We have a fairly active Patriot Rider group in the area. I will tell you from experience, when they see all those bikes, these
sh--theads shut up quick. If there is a chapter near you, help out of you can. The men and women who serve do not make the policy. They and their loved ones deserve some respect. Here is the Patriot Mission statement:
Patriot Guard Riders Mission Statement

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives.

1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.

2. Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you.  We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

No matter whether you are a much decorated service person or a serial killer, your family should have the right to lay you to rest without interference, or the services being made the focus of a political statement.

Well with a Constitution which protects them, they cannot be shut down. You have to take the good with the bad. However  the Bikers have a right to hold large flags up to shield the family from seeing this vermin, we also have a right to give them  that stare that says as soon as the Cops leave, a few of you may trip and bruise yourself.

as a member of tha patriot guard riders  http://www.patriotguard.org/Home/tabid/53/Default.aspx i've had the displeasure of running into these "fine" people from time to time. what nice folks, protesting and heckling at a soldiers funeral, takes a real courageous soul to do that, they should be real proud of themselves, #$%*s

Actually, I'd be interested, Mr B? I'd hope it would involve lots of smoke, and noise?

I'm a God fearing Christian (and I've got plenty to be afraid of............) but these turkeys hide behind their "religion" and their right to free speech, to disrupt good people in their time of suffering while telling the families of the fallen that their kid is going to hell.

I really can't think of anything more disgusting right now. I hope those patriot guard guys do help 'em fall down a bit.   :'(

We have a strong contengent of volunteers for the Patriot Guard right here in Clarksville Tennessee, seeing as how we're right next door to Ft. Campbell (home of the 101st Airborne Division), and we've already had at least one protest down on Ft Campbell Blvd.

Suffice it to say, they had to be protected by police from the general public.

G`day guys
well as an aussie i hadnt heard of either of these groups until recently, i heard about these damned religious zealots due to the heath ledger passing, and the patriot riders only now from joining this forum.
i have just spent the last hour browsing through the patriot riders website and all i can say is BLOODY GOOD ONYA GUYS this is the way to show love respect and honour, and though i`m not a religious man i dare say this is what god meant when he said love thy neighbor
these so called "church" members are worse in my books than the KKK or even the nazis (even they honoured the dead soldiers)
believe me you have the support of people from many countries, many races and many religions in your efforts to pay your respects to the fallen heroes of your nation
you are heroes yourselves, worthy of respect and honour, you may think that what you do isnt much but it is a wonderful thing to see
clear roads and good weather to you all
cheers

Far from being a religious person, I think these people are sad. Another problem is that they get a lot of attention from media around the world, which can give them status as spokespersons for the entire US population.
Although I don't see eye to eye in much of the current politics of the US government, I know that the average American man and woman are fiendly, caring and respectful towards their fellow man. I've got lots of friends in the US via the internet, and what a great bunch they are!

One thing that puzzles me about these religious fundamentalists. (Christians, Muslims or whatever, they're all the same in my book...) They all say that only their God can judge man for his sins, and the biggest sin is man putting himself over God. Isn't that just what they are doing themselves by making these statements....? :-\

Well Ledger is going back to Austrailia for burial which is only fitting. I imagine if this bunch or some offshoot tries anything over there some ass will be kicked.

No matter what a persons religious or political views are a funeral is a funeral, to stand outside of one and make any sound other than what tears make when they hit the floor is an invitation to endure what ever pain and agony befalls you.  This crowd has secured a place in society equal to that of child rapist and murderers.

Well guys, I hate to admit it, but fred and his group live here in my home town of Topeka, Kansas.  The "church" (not recognized by any national church) consists entirely of members of his own family.  They all live in "compound" that is church property for tax purposes.  The reason that they do well legally is that most of the family are lawyers (although fred himself was dis-barred years ago.)  However, Topekans as a general rule are so embarrassed by them its not funny.  Our mayor sends a letter to the mayor of any city that they are going to visit apologizing for their behavior in advance.  Here a few years ago, we had a lady chase the "protesters" with her car down the sidewalk!  They took her to court, but she was found not guilty by a juror of her peers.  Nowdays, the group has several video cameras running whenever they protest to try and catch anyone that tries to stop them.  People in Topeka hate them mostly for their graphic signs, and the fact that they have children with them holding signs with one guy bent over with another behind him, and don't like having to explain to their small children what the signs mean.  So, please accept my apology on behalf of the people of Topeka for their actions.  We  do not wish to be associated with them in any way.
