Another Brake question...
« on: September 10, 2005, 07:00:12 AM »
Okay, I did a search of the boards on this subject and only ended up with more questions.

here's the skinny-
I needed to replace the fron brake caliper on my '76 CB750F. I got one off of ebay that was in great shape (I mean really great shape!!!) In the process of putting it on I ran into two problems. #1.) ht ecaliper came with new brake pads (which  was very happy about), but the new pads seemed thicker than the system could handle. I ended up having to put a spacer between the caliper side and the holding bracket, as well as remove the little plastic ring behind the pad on that side, just to make it fit on the bike. One all the new Stainless Steel brake were in place and bleed out I still didn't have a whole lot of stopping power (Problem #2). After riding it around a bit and trying to scuff in the pads, the braking improved, but it's still not what I would hoped it would be.

Now, my other bike is a Ducati, so, obviously, I am spoiled as to goods brakes. And I realize that the CB will never have as good of a brake at the Duc does, but is there any way to get it better than it is?

My Seach resulted in the possibilty of drilling the rotor? What efect will that have?

And as for the pads being too thick: The brake came off of a '77. Did they change the brake rotor, mounting system, or pad thinckness between the two years?

I repalced my old pads with new ones after I rebuilt my master cylinder, and had adjustment issues as well.

solution: I sanded about 1mm off of the caliper puck and re-beveled the outer edge. the decrease in size allowed me to refit all components and tighten all hardware properly.

Make sure you HAVE the right pads. If they are from honda, they should fit no problem BUTT you will need to push the piston all the way back in. And while you are doing this, you may as well check the piston condition and the seal.

Check the FAQ for dual disk setup and do drill the rotors. I would like to know if anyone has a template for drilling 750 rotors.

I got a worn out rotor the same diameter from my local mechanic.(with holes came off a suzuki)

Drilled two holes thru the template and bolted it to my disc, then went to town.
