Since I have the motor apart it wouldn't hurt to be sure.  I had some oil coming out of my exhaust and leaking from the pipe when I took it off the bike, not a lot but enough.  It's probably due to the rings not being seated and/or my cam tensioner being installed incorrectly.

I have the two scraper rings (connected to each other) installed first into the bottom groove.  I have the redish brown ring with the writing "n100" facing up installed next.  I have the last chrome ring installed on top and it didn't look like it made a difference which side was up.

Yes it does matter I need to e-mail you the file is to big for here. i cant get my image program to work.

Appreciate it.  I probably thought through how I did the top ring when I assembled but it's too long ago and the ring doesn't seemed beveled, etc.

Not fitted my rings yet, but having looked at illustration 1, I think that the arrow and words "Engine front" look wrong as it points along the piston pin center line.  Anyone care to comment?

Thanks again Joe for sending the instructions and to Gamma for posting them here.  I have everything installed and as my top rings were not marked, they could be installed either side up.  I realigned the rings according to the general wisdom and the instructions as well but everything looks good to me and after repainting my jugs/head I'm getting her back together.

It's mistake in the instructions or we're not understanding it right because that would be impossible unless the piston pin carrier is something other than what we think.

Just an observation:
Notice that the title of the instructions it says "4-Cycle/Auto Rings." Most "auto" engines are longitudinally mounted, whether it's an I-4 or V-12. So the front of the engine would be face the front of the vehicle and the pins would be parallel to the direction of travel. On a few vehicles, like our SOHCs, the engine is transverse mounted. For our bikes I think this "front" would be the left side of the engine, where the alternator is. Or you could ignore that part and just place your gaps as shown in relation to the pin centerline.

Also many rings actually have a letter "T" to indicate the top of the ring. LOOK CAREFULLY.
When you get the piston rings and you open each package of rings they are already stacked in the proper order and they are already facing UP.

But most people start playing around with them and within a few minutes they have them all mixed up.

When you get the piston rings and you open each package of rings they are already stacked in the proper order and they are already facing UP.

But most people start playing around with them and within a few minutes they them all mixed up.
All rings with lettering go lettering up. Some rings don't have lettering from the manufacturer and can go either way.

All rings with lettering go lettering up. Some rings don't have lettering from the manufacturer and can go either way.

If you look VERY closely, near the ring gap you will see a Letter "T: acid etched in the surface. There may be some exceptions but rarely.

My advice. Open the package and install them the way the factory stacked them.
