Hello everyone, I'm a long time SOHC4 fan, and first time poster.  After a long departure, I'm finally getting back into not only the Honda world, but the SOHC4 world as well, and I couldnt be more excited to do it!

I'm looking at buying a 77 CB750K.  Its been sitting for a couple of years, and needs the usual things, some TLC, carb cleaning, a battery, etc.  The one issue I have is that it doesnt have an exhaust.  At all.  Now, my plan is not to turn this into a complete resto bike or anything like that, I'm buying it to take some trips on, and because I love these old Hondas, so I dont need authentic original pipes, I'm not against them, but I'm not married to them either.

Can anyone tell me about what I'm looking at, price-wise to stick an exhaust of some sort on this bike?  Either stock, or aftermarket 4 into 2 or 4 into 1?  It doesnt have to be a new pipe either, used is fine.

I'm planning to clean it up, definitely paint it, and get it running well, then use it to take a trip or something this summer.  I can snag it for $250, which I dont think is a horrible deal for a mechanically complete, but ugly CB750

I think you can get a complete 4-into-1 exhaust system (like a MAC) for about $300. Prices go up from there.  Check around on Ebay, Dennis Kirk, and other places like that. Also, do a search in the forums...Im sure there's more than a thread or two on CB750 exhausts.

Good luck with the project! Does it turn over OK?  How long was it sitting without the pipes on it?

I've got a MAC 4-1 that makes the bike run and sound fine.  There's lots of folks on this forum that would dissuade you from MAC but I'm relatively happy.  If I bother to really clean up my bike (frame off, polish engine, powdercoat frame, etc.) I'll be looking for a factory exhaust but I think that'll be 1200 or so.  The MAC did discolor but part of that is jetting adjustments and part of it is just what happens with aftermarket exhausts. 

The MAC sounds like a very good alternative for you if you're trying to keep your initial costs down.

There are always guys selling there old systems on Ebay. Should be able to pick up something that will work for you.

Well the newer headers may work but will most certainly require modification. You would want to measure the distance between the ports and the diameter of the ports on both the bike and the headers. I know the 77/78 K and F will fit.

I will tell you that the front is not all 77.

Unless the frame says 77 then this bike is not a 77 -the front and back indicators are pre-75 (possibly whole front end replaced). That being said you do have 77 carbs, tank. Non-stock sidecover (left side),non-stock gear shifter and a footpeg bracket that was probably there to stop the centerstand hitting the 4-1 exhaust. For $250 your going to have spend a whole lot more to get it running - who knows what the inside of tank/engine is like. And carbs will need a complete going through. Cables? Airbox? Filter? Tires?

As for the nighthawk pipes I dont think they will fit. Mac 4-2 will set you back $300 but probably find cheaper on Ebay.

It has pod filters that come with it, and the stock airbox is lost to the ages. 

You might want to check the carbs to see if they were re-jetted to run with the pods or if they're still stock.  If stock jetting, you may want to just buy a stock filter and used air box assembly to avoid the trouble of setting it up for pods.
