need help with cm400t tuning
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:32:54 PM »
Hello all, I am trying to get a 1981 cm400t running to save on gas expense. I cleaned the rusty gas tank with "the works" toilet bowl
cleaner as I read on this forum, worked great on a nasty tank, and cheap. I rebuilt the carbs with kits from ebay, but I still have a problem.  When you wack open the throttle, it doesn't do much and then slowly revs up.  When you are up to speed, it doesn't want to decelerate when you roll off the throttle. Pull in the clutch and the engine races, then slowly decelerates.  Seems like a lean issue to me. I sprayed gumout around the intake boots looking for a vacuum leak but could fine nothing. I also did a carb sync and that seemed to help for about 5 minutes but it could have been my imagination. Any hopefully easy quick fixes come to mind? Thanks for any help.

still sounds like too much air coming from someplace, check to see that the slides arent worn and the carb diaphrams are ok (those are cv carbs arent they?)

check and lube your cables - they might be sticking as well..

If its been stood for a while those carbs are a nightmare! you may need to totally strip them and have them ultrasonicaly cleaned and sometimes even that dont work on the jetways

slides and cables are what come to mind for me. Make sure they are moving freely.

Thanks for your replys, the cables aren't sticking, and the slides
also don't seem to be the problem. I tried the pilot jets anywhere from 11/2 turns up to 3 turns out with no success either. I hate to take off the carbs again, hoping I was missing something simple.
