Picked up another BMW
« on: February 03, 2008, 06:35:23 PM »
This time for a friend.  This one is a 1975 R90/6 in blue.  Mine is a 1975 R75/6 in black.  I'm pretty sure the bikes are completely identical from a parts perspective with the exception of the piston/cylinder/head.

Spotted it in the local Craigslist, went over and bought it.  Got it for a decent price.  Rides nicely, lots of regular maintenance including recent spline lube etc.  It's a little dirty, but should shine up nicely.  No dents or dings, sidecovers are there and not cracked.  Crash bar carries auxillary lighting which apparantly is a huge drain on the battery, so it will likely go.  Also has the BMW backrest.  Original toolkit is in its proper place also.

Came with Craven Golden Arrow bags which seem to be worth a pretty penny on their own.  Tried to convince my friend I should have them, but he decided he should keep them  ;)

We're now planning our trip to North Carolina or thereabouts.  About 3,500 KM round trip.  Having two identical bikes will make carrying spares and tools much easier.

I'm also pretty sure you can swap out top ends on the /5 and /6's. Check Boxerworks.com to confirm, and for other questions, if you haven't used that newsgroup. It's very informative, and the folks there are almost as nice as the folks here.

I have the /7 liter bike and love it. I remember enjoying the feeling of the heavier flywheel you guys have. Although it caused some lateral torque on accelerating, especially in first on the four speed /5 I had, it had gobs of torque and felt great!
I hope you guys have a great trip. If you're coming through the new england area, let me know. I'll ride a bit with you, if I can make my schedule coincide.

Things are shaping up for the trip - got myself a nice set of Wixom bags for my bike on eBay for $77.  They'll need paint and general refurbishing, but for that price I can't go wrong.
