I just picked up new tapered steering head bearings... I poked through the old posts and can't really understand if I need to install a shim (actually there are 2 included in the All Balls Set that I have) or not.  Has anyone used this brand before and if so do I use one of the spacers provided?   There were non specific instructions included in the packaging.   They were a good  price  38$ from Bikebandit, if anyone could use a new headset.

Thanks  Tim

I installed an "All Balls" set on my '73 750 and my kit only came with one shim. I used it, but I had a small gap above the headlight ears over the fork tubes, so in retrospect, I probably didn't need it.

I think there was a detailed article posted on here about someone's experience installing tapered bearings and if I remember right, they used the shim too and found out they didn't need it.

Check the fortune cookie sized instructions which came with the bearings.  Measure the height of the bearing stack you remove from your bike and compare with the stack height of the bearings you plan to install.  You use the proper shim to get the same bearing height stack.  I learned the hard way.  On the first installation of All Balls bearings I did not see the instructions and did not use a shim.  The lower fork tree was too close to the frame and there was interference.  Since you can not get the bearings out without damaging them I had to get a new set and do it right.  I ended up using the thinner of the two shims.  I was advised by an owner of a CB550 that this was the shim he used.  Good luck.

Sorry for a secondary post, but I found the site I referred to: http://www.stephenbottcher.net/Honda/tapered.htm

How did the install turn out? I have the same kit and a 76 750F which I think has the same head. Did you pack the bearings in grease? What about using the spacer? I measured mine and don't think I'll need it.

Thanks!

I also used the thinner shim and it`s a perfect fit for the CB500 and so the 550 should be the same way

I ran into some difficulties with my 73 GT550 Suzuki and haven't installed yet.....  That old dog needed a bunch of attention to keep it roadworthy.  Based on the most recent post I need to use the thinner shim to install ther bearings on the CB550.  I'll more than likely install after the fall.  I want to enjoy the remaining part of the summer.   I'll post my experiences  then.
