I think $600 is a reasonable price. I have a soft spot for the 450's though. I'm glad it's not close to me or I would be there tomorrow

If it is running, buy it! I just picked up a 72 CB450 with 9,036 miles in great condition. The guages are in fantastic shape, motor is smooth and clean and the seat is not torn. I'll post pics soon. Probably overpaid a bit, $900.00, but it also had a box full of NOS parts, directionals, mounting stems, mirrors, fork seals, taillight, etc. Love the 450s.

I'm currently reading "Pictorial history of japanese motorcycles" and the author states that the later CB450 was a much better bike than the original Black Bomber, and that even when the CB750 was so groundbreaking that the style was imitated in the rest of the honda lineup, the latter CB450 is a great fun to ride, handles superb and have a good, tractable engine.

      From what I know (and have also learned from Bomber builds that I have followed), the 450 was quite a breakthrough when it was introduced and was improved through time. Of course I'm just a bit partial though. Another case where a particular model was noticeably improved, was the SL350 Honda. I never new it, until I got one, but the SL350K0 (in my opinion) would mostly be desirable because it was the 1st of the line and maybe because it was the only one with an electric starter. Thing is, the other changes to the later models, were significant enough to overlook the fact that the electric starter was gone. I apologize for the slight deviation from the 450, just verifying a point brought up about the quality of the 450 being improved do from the beginning to the end. All that aside,  I think it would be worth it to pick up on the 450.

I will go a little way off topic too, but I think nobody can discuss that in general terms, the later examples are better than the first examples of a given motorcycle. During the production life, the manufacturers modify their original design, either to fix teething problems, or to appeal to the tastes of the day. After 30 years, tastes change and maybe you rather have one of the models that were considered ugly in the day. When it comes to technology, later models are obviously advanced with regard to first models, and when in many cases the power output is reduced, in general it is done to make the motorcycle more reliable, thus increasing its life and reducing warranty claims.

That's what happened with CB350's. The engine was pretty much unchanged, but the camshaft was modified to reduce peak power as people was riding them hard. After the CB750 was out, the styling changed to make the twin look like a younger sibling of the superbike. Probably, early models command a higher price today, but the later models are suppoused to be the most developed.

         Hey duster, the SL350KO was the only one with the electric starter.
            SL350K0 69-70 Frame Sn. #SL350-1000001

        BTW duster, the frames of the SL350 K1 & K2, are much better than the K0's. I never really knew exactly how much difference there was between the K0 and the later models, until just a bit back.

GIT IT! THese things are crazy resale around here. The folk who remember know them, need them , want them. The 450 is a better performer than the older cousin the 500, but both good bikes. Good Luck..

        Yeah, I feel like that it's a pretty good bike myself. Consider the fact that it was built to give the British vertical twins fits and did a pretty good job of it.
