Thanks for the nomination and the second.   The bike started out as your typical "project"  bike.  I purchased it as a non-runner from a guy across town.  I got it home cleaned out the gas tank and tried to start it and it seemed like it wanted to fire but would not.  So I checked the points and they were way off, as soon as I static timed the points the bike fired right up.  I rode it for about a year as a stock bike and then I came across an old Santee ridgid frame for a 550 on one of the other forums.  I spent about 9 months doing a little bit here and there and finally last summer got serious about putting it all togeather.  I did eveything my self in the garage with hand tools and a cheap harbor freight welder.  The bike is a blast to ride and handles like a Mountain bike with a 550cc motor in it.

Here is a link to some of the pics from the build.

Looks good, and nice workmanship. :o :o I don't think I could handle the hardtail very long tho. :-\ :-\ Pipes might be a little loud for me too.

I'll get some more pictures together soon, I'm spending lots of time on the garage with my cafe at the moment  the next job is to put this bike through a bit of a change, new tail , paint, bars, lights, but my exhausts are staying  ;D

....erm is this what I have to do to accept?

The bike was bought from a pal, who decided to 'improve' it with a sledgehammer and welder, I bought it and let it get a bit more ratty.
The the motor decided to get a bit rough, it initially started as a engine rebuild, the top ring on no2 was broke and jammed between the positon and the bore, and all the top rings on the other pistons were broken. And it still ran!

When the engine was in bits I looked at the bike and decided to clean it up, i had i my possession the bits you see on the bike that were bought quite cheap, its a GSXr400SP front end and the VFR750FM rear end, with a ducati 916 replica tail and the CBX550 tank.
I had to get the triples re-stemmed, chopped off and built a new subframe, sourced a new shock, and a bit of paint and it looks like you see it now.

I'm far from being a purist, but I can't vote for either bike. I like the looks/style, and terrific workmanship, but both are so far from being a Honda any more that to me they shouldn't be considered. James' bike is so close to being a crotchrocket it would probably been easier to just buy one, and the only parts being Honda are the engine and gas tank.  :( :( :(

Whew! Quite a bit if work in both of those bikes! ;) Sure, they're both quite different than what we're used to seeing when looking at SOHC4s, but still worth checking out though. 8) Good luck to both. I'd be like ekim98, I don't know how well I could handle the hardtail, but I also don't know if I could handle the riding position of the other one either. Doesn't mean that I don't like them though. Just means that my body isn't very forgiving as years go by. :-\

Where's spikeybike's awesomely unique 550? Almost every month his bike has been nominated and i vote for his bike everytime its here. The bike is simply unique. Its not a cafe, its not a chopper, its not factory concours resto. It's a whole new genre of its own.  I think this is his month.  So, I nominate spikeybike's cb550. Come on everybody... spikey's! spikeys's! spikey's!    :)

I love all the 3 of the bikes.  This is probably the best botm I have seen since being here and the first one I am going to vote in.  Though it is nice to see nice restores, its even better to see custom work.  Every restore looks exactly the same and to be honest I hate the way these bikes looks factory.  Its nice to see bikes that people actually put more just shiny parts on.  It is easy to restore a bike to factory if you have the money to fork out for the parts but it is hard to customize bikes like these even with the money.  It takes alot more work to build a nice custom than it takes to restore a bike back to factory.  Anyways this month will be a hard decision.  I think I am leaning towards blackhogs bike but really like the streetfighter look of james's bike.  Hmm tough decision.
