Looking great!  What sort of paint did you use on the engine cases?

Know what color scheme you're going to use on the tins yet?

Hot Damn! Things are looking great!

Some day I'm going to have to tear my engine apart to fix an oil leak, so I may have many questions for you when the time comes.

;D Grey and pink ought to be original eh'

I actually got a match for the original blue black metalic. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

What sort of paint did you use on the engine cases?

I used VHT "cast aluminum colour" high heat Brake Caliper paint. It's a little brighter than I expected but the finish is nice. I baked the parts after painting them to 220F for an hour to cure. A fellow SOHC'er, not on this forum yet though, told me he has used this paint on all his bike engines with good results.

I got the engine mounted on the engine stand today. real nice to work on now  :)

Thanks!  :)  They're painted with gold base coat under the clear coat.

Got the forks on today and set the parts on to see how she looks....

Just a few more pieces to add now....

like the engine  :D

Just have to assemble the top end of the engine and put it in the frame. All the other bits are ready on the bench waiting. Got all the wiring back together today. The lights that are supose to blink, blink and the ones that are supose to stay on, stay on.  8)

here's a few more pics:

Went with the earlier style side emblems but painted the "350" gold to match the tank stripes. didn't like the orange paint on the original emblems.

If all goe's well it will actually be done by May.  :) :)

Hi Matt ... your project looks good. I am still hopeful for a mid May finish with my CB350F. Got held up this last weekend doing my fork seals on my CBX400F so I can keep a machine on the road. Have some parts away getting chrome plated at present. Tell me, what oil do you think is best put in the engines, synthetic or mineral?
Keep up the good work. Cheers ... Phil in NZ

wow  :o

That is looking absolutely FANTASTIC. Can't wait to see it with that gorgeous looking engine in.

I'd love the tank on mine to look as wonderful as yours, mine has a few scratches which spoil it a bit, but then it's original and in 35 years it's bound to get some! In a way I like it as it does show it's originality. But then I can't help feeling jealous when I see one as clean as yours will be... ;D

Thanks,  8)  I have some chrome that I wish was a little better but I think I'll just keep my eye open for some better replacements after the bike is done. For now I just want to get it on the road  ;) I was just thinking last night about which oil I should use. I've heard that synthetics don't work well with these old engines as the bearings are not designed for it. Also, I've had the clutches slip on other engines by running non-motorcycle specific oil before. I think I'm going to go with a high grade mineral oil for mine, but I think I'm going to start going through some of the great oil debate threads on this forum before I decide for sure. At any rate, I don't think synthetics are worth the gamble when mineral oil will work just fine.

Thanks too  ;) I'm trying to pay a lot of attention to detail with this one. Each part I put back on is either cleaned, painted or polished. I'm anxious to see it with the engine in as well. My machinist cut his thumb about four weeks ago and has been waiting for it to heal to finish my head. He said were going to get back at it this week. Not much left to do other than finish up the porting and grid the seats.
I think it's awesome that you have an original painted 350F loony 8) , I think it's way better to keep it that way with a few scratches than to freshen it up with new paint. Mine was just too rough to recover; paint was faded beyond repair  :(

Fixed up the other badge today...

Cleaned of the old black paint with a dental pic and some 400 grit, than masked off the raised lettering and cut off the excess with a razor. I had already painted inside the lettering with a brush.

Primed one coat, than three coats of semi-gloss black:

Yup, Gotta have Tim's when working on the bike  ;) I wish they would make that Roll-Up thing a bi-annual. Oh well, makes it more fun just once a year i guess.

Anywho, Finnaly getting the engine back together now. Last night I got the pistons on the rods and the cylinder on too. Ended up using two hose clamps as ring compressors to get er done. Worked pretty well. I'm hoping to have the head on by Friday and with any luck, running by Sunday. Won't be done by May though but at least the first week in May  8)

Carbs are done. Polished the top caps and the bowls and installed new kits. Ignition is ready to go on and all the other stuff is waiting. Shouldn't be long after the engine is in the bike before it is running.

Now here's a thing I stumbled across on getting new plugs. The Clymer manual says DR8ESL and the NGK website says D8EA. I went with D8EA after reading this: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=11339.0

 Cheers, Matt

Will have more pics when I get at the engine again.... hopefuly tonite.

O.k, I was a little optimistic saying I'd be done last Sunday  ::)

Here's the head before I put the valves in...

Surfaced and painted:

Looking out the exhaust ports:

Intake ports, little change here.

Exhaust ports, Maybe overkill on the porting.... I'll find out shortly  ;)

Looks Awesome Matt. How's she ride? Much more power?

BTW, how did you do the seat trim?  I can't seem to get the plastic chrome to go on smooth and stay on.
