mattcb350f's........CB350F Project/Restoration (DONE)
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:41:49 PM »
Well since there's this new Project Shop section I decided to start my own log on my 350F rebuild.

This is it: 1974 Honda CB350F, bought for $300 in August/07

Began tear down before christmas/07....

At this point I'm waiting on parts to arrive. Engine is dissasembled, cleaned, machined and ready for new brgs., gaskets, etc....frame and all painted parts stripped or glass beaded awaiting paint (should be done by next week  8))

As for mods, I'm sticking with stock pistons but porting the head and adding a Web Camshaft with a mild grind. Exhaust is a MAC 4-1 but I want to change the baffle. Buzz @ dynoman says his kerker baffles may fit.

Project end date:  :D :D :D  May, I hope.. ;)

Got some parts painted  :)

This is my Brother painting my frame, swingarm, etc

It turned out pretty well, now I can start the reassembly stage of the resto project.  8)

My used oven also just arrived so I can bake my engine parts and my box of parts arrived from Honda on Monday. Things are starting to come togeather.

Seat cover arrived  :)

Most of my parts are in, now I've started to put things togeather. Of course, the first thing I start with is the swingarm..... noticed a little problem:

Honda put a grease nipple in the bolt that holds the swingarm on and a passage way to the hollow pivot shaft, but never drilled any holes in the "pivot shaft" to allow the grease to get to the bushings  ???

In the pic, I drilled out two holes where they should have been in the grease pockets... and pumped some grease in there to make sure it worked..

Glad I found this before I put it togeather  ;)

Must have a look at my swing arm as well before it goes back in. I noticed the shaft the brake pedal mounts on very dry and lacks lubrication as well. Keep up the good work.

The seats coming along, but I've been busy with the forks...

I've just started on installing the seat cover since I had to weld some cracks in the pan.... then paint it and reinstall the foam:

The seat cover continued.....

Cover fit well. a little heat was the trick to getting it nice and tight. hairdryer was not enough so I held the seat near the woodstove  :) Got the whole seat cover warm at once.

Porting is actually the next job. My machinist neighbour brought home his porting tools today so I plan to get at it tomarrow.... won't likely be done tomarrow though  ;D

Matt, how did you get the old foam off and back on? Did it just peel off? What kind of glue did you use?
Its going to be one sweet ride.
Thanks,
Keith

Hi Keith, I got the old foam off rather easily since the pan had started to rust underneath the foam and the foam was starting to peel off on its own. Where there was no rust was a little harder, I had to work the foam away from the edges and work my hand in between the foam and the pan to get er' loose. Only lost a few bits of foam, not enough to cause a problem. Thing I found is I couldn't pull the foam away from the pan, I had to sort of push it away with my hand from underneath. The real trick was getting the bits of rust off the foam after it was off. There's no easy way, just have to pick them off one by one.

The glue I used was a can of Contact Cement. Came in a can with a brush attached to the lid. I can get the brand name if you want that.... can't remember it off the top of my head.

The only reason I took the foam off was because I had two cracks to weld, on each side just ahead of the hinge area. Both of my seats have cracks here so I think it's a common problem.

I also sandblasted each side of the pan and gave it some fresh paint, except on the inside of the pan where the seat cover is glued. I left that bare and blasted for the glue to stick to.

Just took the clamps off tonight and glued the trim back on. Glue is good and solid, I just hope it holds up  :D

We'll find out this summer when I'm sliding around on it.

I like the project. Looks like it's coming along great.
I have a '73 350F that I'm currently getting back on the road. Same color as yours and I paid almost the same amount ($260). I'm interested in seeing what a full resto is going to look like. I went for a "freshen up" rather than resto. Mostly cleaning it up while replacing worn parts.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the seat cover? It looks a lot nicer than the ones I've seen on Ebay. I only have a small tear as of now, but I'm sure it will gain some ground as it's ridden. The installation looks similar to the installation of a VW bug headliner. Stretching, contact cement and lots and lots of clips and clamps.

Actually I got it off Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.ca/CB350-seat-cover-for-Honda-CB350F-1968-73-F-F1-FOUR_W0QQitemZ150191744028QQihZ005QQcategoryZ35589QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

I'll have some pics of the finished product shortly (misplaced camera  ::)).... reinstalled the trim and put the passenger strap on (supplied with the cover)

Twas' a slow process installing the cover... lots of glue, clamps and patience  ;)

If you're looking at buying this seat cover, remember it has no trim molding on the bottom. So you need to use the old one. The original cover has the trim molded to the cover and the trim is actually what holds the cover to the pan. Got to cut the old trim off and glue it on after.

I've heard the David Siver spares' covers have the trim on them.. but I could be wrong.

Ok, here's the seat cover in its final form...

I used a steel rivet in place of the rusty chrome bolt on the seat strap here. It wont dig into the seat like the old bolt did:

And here's some before pics of the intake and exhaust ports before porting...

Well my project had taken a back seat to college work in the past few weeks. But now I've got some time to get back at it  :)

The tank, sidecovers and fork ears are all primed and ready to be painted and this afternoon I'm putting the transmission in and the cases together.

Suppose to be up to 14 C this weekend (that's about 59 F) so summer's on the way  ;D
