So, if the only prints on the can were the owners and the suspected perpetrator...
You're going to assume the owner put the paint in his own engine?  Or, the real perp used rubber gloves?

People do get convicted on circumstantial evidence, you know.

The owner could very well put the paint in his own engine in order to harm somebody with a false accusation. These things happens all the time. The real perp could also have used rubber globes, or simply another tin or POR that he took with him. You should have to prove that the POR inside the engine came from the same tin.

What I say is that, even when your gut feelings tells you who the perpetrator is, to make an accusation you better have solid proof because somebody's reputation and/or job is serious stuff to be treated lightly with weak suspicion. You need strong proof that withstand any refutation, and if you don't have them, you have no case and a broken engine, and strong payback feelings.

Yeah, what would happen if there were several different sets of prints on the can?

I mean, it's no crime if you walk past and see a can of POR and pick it up to read the label (not forgetting that the 'shop is full of mechanics who might be interested in buying some to use themselves for their own projects) and putting it down again, and then there's the prints from the guy who put the stuff on the shelf in the store you bought it from, and the prints of the cashier, etc etc.

As Raul says, even if it's got the prints of a guy you don't like on it, that doesn't automatically make him the perpetrator. To convict, you need "Proof, beyond reasonable doubt". Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

retribution on a personal level may sound gratifying but it's not the way to go.  If you get caught your the one that gets sacked and maybe thrown in jail for good measure.  You can get a one time use digital video camera or (better) a webcam for next to nothing.  Set up the same situation or a similar one when you know the guy will have the opportunity to take advantage.  If you don't follow my advice then my secondary advice is do nothing.  It may end poorly for you.

I somehow think the "perp" won't attempt it again, he knows that Canuck is "on to him", so he's probably "laying low", and if he gets caught it'll mean a life "on the lam", etc etc............  ;D

Bravado.  It's not just for breakfast anymore.  I hear there's a lot of it going on inside prison walls, too. ::)

I personally think that a long prison term would be worse than death.  Pull the 357 but use it to keep them from running away while someone gets a cop.  Put them in jail for a while.  Punishes them without all the negative repercussions that come along with taking it into your own hands.  BTW I agree with you in spirit but that isn't how this society is setup.
