Rattling sounds (solved?)
« on: January 21, 2008, 06:24:17 PM »
I was having issues with my '72 350F project with it being very difficult to shift and the clutch was dragging badly.  I yanked a clutch assembly off another '74 I have around here and printed out that post about lining up all the clutch plates and friction disks.  I got it all back together and left the oil out of it and pushed it around the garage a little.  Clutch worked great.  I started it and ran it for a minute and the clutch continued to work well.  Put oil back in it and ran it a while and the clutch seemed to be good.  I do feel a little drag now that it has cooled off and sat for a while but way better than before; it would stall if you put it in gear.

Now the problem, I've been out in the garage holding the clutch in while spinning the wheel backwards and forwards (kind of a "I'm so happy it works" routine).  But spinning it backwards sometimes results in a rattling sound.  The faster you spin, the better chance of rattling.  If you stop spinning the wheel after you hear the rattling, it will lock if you attempt to spin it backwards right away.  It then needs to be spun in the forward direction.  I haven't dropped anything into it but a PO may have.  It only does this when the clutch is engaged.  Putting it in neutral and spinning it has no rattling effect.  I noticed when I was riding this bike around my yard a while back that it would freeze if you tried to push backwards at times so I'm sure I didn't do anything when I installed the clutch basket.

This isn't adding up well.  How much could I see if I take the oil pan off?

Put oil back in it and ran it a while and the clutch seemed to be good.

I'm surprised it's still running at all. These engines should never be ran without oil. Very expensive things happen when you do. Anyway, it still runs so lets move on  :D

I'm not sure, but it could be the "one way" clutch for the starter that is making the clutch seem funny. Someone with more experience with this would probably know but that's what it sounds like to me.

We also have to make sure we are talking about the same thing... Neutral and clutch disengaged are two different things.  ;) Neutral - transmission in the neutral position
                                      Clutch engaged - lever out.
Clutch disengaged - lever pulled in,

Matt.

:)  I ran it for about 15 seconds...   Just enough to let the clutch go and see it take off.  The problem is evident with the clutch is "disengaged" based on your definitions.   I too was wondering about things like the kickstarter and such, I guess I need to try and isolate some things.  Maybe take the kickstart shaft out and try it again.  Remove the clutch cover and try to spin it (after removing the plugs of course).  Of course, if the gears still spin when the bike is in neutral, there probably isn't anything stuck in the gears...  I don't know, looks like a next weekend project...

My very first bike.. a CL 175..

I split the cases, put it back together and everything worked.. well not the oil pump at first but that is another story..

Anyway it worked , and if I recall it hung up the trans backing up like you said.. now I dont think it was always.. just sometimes..but not sure..

Anyway I was just learning to ride, and I came up short behind a car or truck at a light on a slight incline. Well I guess it was a standard and I saw it start to roll back  :o, and I was freaking out!!.. They got it going though about the time the bumper was about 3/8 inch off my rim!! :o

That was in 72 I think..never did ever find out why but I suspect it was a shim put on wrong side of a gear or something..

Got around to removing the starter.  No change...  except for getting oil all over the place.  Drained oil and removed kickstarter.  No more clicking (which was more like a racheting sound now that I think about it).  I put the kickstarter shaft back in and I have no trouble at this point.  I do not have oil back in it yet.  I don't know why the addition of oil would screw it up but knowing my luck it will...  I don't know why this would have made noises, I couldn't have possibly messed up the menial task of putting the kick start shaft in it back when...
