Rotor/stator rebuild?
« on: June 12, 2005, 03:16:29 PM »
Anyone ever rebuilt a rotor or stator on a SOHC4?

I've got an 82 CB650SC whose rotor is showing a whole 0.8 ohm resistance.  Sounds a little "short" to me.

There are electric motor repair shops in the area, of course.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the job entails, directions on how to do it (if anyone  has them), opinions on whether the job is worth doing myself, or is just too aggravating.

The bike was a free from the back of the garage special that I've already put too much work into to let go.  You know the bike - sat for 8 years with gas in the bowls, untouched by human hands.  So far, it's been carb rebuilds, fork rebuilds, head bearings, speedometer repair, caliper rebuilds, seat recovering - that got me to the point where I could ride it - for about 275 miles, and then the charging system went away.  Well, not away, really.  12.25v @ 5000rpm does not a charging system make.  After running Electrex's chart, I got "bad rotor".  Presumably, I could charge the battery up, and ride another 275 miles, and then charge again, but it's not my first choice.

I love free stuff.  It always let me spend so much more than buying working stuff would have.  I like to think of this bike as a free motorcycle repair course, with lab fees for tools and parts, and more parts, and more parts.

Wish I could ride it, though.

Buy a rebuilt rotor or better yet a new one.

Before you spend money, are you sure the regulator is properly adjusted?

i went through a problem just like this a short time ago, and it was the wires that come off the generator about one inch off the windings, they had become hard and brittle and one of the inner cores of the wires had broken.
cut through it, soldered it, heat shrink and the problem was fixed.

The 82 CB650SC has the later electronic regulator, so I don't think it's adjustable.  I have a spare (used) RR that gives the same results.  The regulator(s) test good, according to Clymer and Electrex.

This weeks project is to pull the old rotor off the shaft, so I'll have to take a closer look at the wiring once I get it off the engine.  If it's an identifiable break in the wire, I might be able to repair it.  That would still leave me with an elderly rotor with questionable insulation and wiring, but at least it would be running!.  If I don't replace this with a rebuilt/new rotor, I may have to get a voltage indicator to let me know when it goes bad next time.

thanks
