JOE SMITHS JOB
« on: February 04, 2008, 01:28:39 PM »
JOE SMITH'S JOB
Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for
6AM. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his
electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG)! He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA),
designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After
cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down
with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After
setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN ) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his
car (MADE IN GERMANY) filled it with GAS from Saudi Arabia and continued his
search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB! At the end of yet another discouraging
and fruitless day checking his Computer (Made In Malaysia), Joe decided to relax
for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of
wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then
wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA...

When I first started reading this thread, I thought it might be better suited for the humor section, but then didn't think it was very funny.

Well, I am kind of curious.  Is there any country outside of Asia where there are domestic manufacturers of consumer electronics?  This seems less a US issue than a western issue in general.  I actually worked for a US company that made electronics.  It was a summer job and one thing I did was sit at a turn-table and plug resistors and other electrical components into circuit boards.  Boring as hell, but there was the side benefit of the 30-something female factory workers who showed great interest in my physical health.

There is nothing wrong with asian alarm clocks, asian electronics or south-american clothing. Can you imagine how would the world be if every country should have to produce and buy it's own production? Each country should have to focus on what they do best -skilled people- or they have best -natural resources or produce- and exchange that for other goods. The problem comes when an american wants to open a shoe factory, or a chinese company wants to get big in the movie industry -just to mention two different examples-

Scots can trade their whiskey for american iron, americans can trade their software for spanish oranges -much betters than the ones from Florida-, or their wheat for TV sets from Indonesia. The world is changing all the time, and it is naïve to think you can make a living from the same job your whole life. Either we are ready to adapt and change careers, or we will have a hard time. "Buying american" -or buying spanish FWIW-, doesn't do any good to the local economy if they can't compete with prices, you are just subsidizing a less-than-efficient industry that, sooner or later, will have to face the challenge to either compete or retire.

**I agree with you Raul! Only reason I posted the above is that it shows the global market we live in. Embrace it for its here to stay.

cheers

Raul makes great points!  I happen to work for a company that makes 90% of what we sell directly to the public in our market, so I like the idea of made in America.  Although, I think it is more of a romantic frame of thought then it is practical.

Take the bike issue for instance.  I live in Milwaukee, but I ride a Honda.  Sure I have come to love my bike, but I originally got a Honda because it was cheap ($500).  The cheapest Harley you will find in this market is a 70's Sportster for $3000.  Who want's a Harley from the AMF years?  Not me.

One of the great things about a free market is the best value sells at the highest rate.  If Americans want to sell more products, try selling something that is not crap!  I doubt I will ever buy another American auto for the same reason.

All this and yesterdays report that service industry jobs, which were said to make up 84% of the U.S. work force now, had declined for the first time. Kind of ominous, especially when government has not clue one on how to rectify the decline. Lowering interest rates will help in the short term, but eventually service industries will become domestic to goods producing countries, the same way it happened in the U.S.

I say run now, and leave me your bikes when you go!! ;D
