K & N air filter - CB750
« on: February 06, 2008, 10:46:18 am »
Im looking for a K & N air filter (same shape as stock NOT pods) to replace the stock airfilter but having trouble identifying a source. Anyone have good experience with a particular company and are they really worth the extra $$s?

Thanks,
Andy

Hey Andy...I'll identify myself as a source if you want a used one AND it comes with oil too. As far as new, I know DK carries them...

Ill take it Mike if its in good nick!

Bring it along to beer night next time.

Many thanks..ok welll that was simple....how about comments on "increased performance" - would it allow more air through the air box thereby potentially leaning up my already rich mixture (CB750K4, stock jets 110/40, air screws 1 - 1.5 turns out).

cheers
Andy

Thanks for that Llyod. What is your reasoning behind getting the K &N filter versus stock? Curious...

Nothing wrong with it as I remember, I'll double check this afternoon. They are supposed to let more air in so should help with your lean issue. The argument against them is that they let more particulate matter into your engine along with the air. As to whether it creates a significant problem...I think there have been posts about that here in the past.

I'll double that question. I thought you were a fan of Uni air filters.

I put one on my 750F back around 1980 or 81.  I bought it from Honda of Anchorage and they were asking the same price for the OEM and the K&N.  The K&N was reusable, the stock filter was not, so it was an economic choice for me.  I can't say I noticed a big performance increase, except my gas mileage didn't start dropping around 4000 miles like it did with the stock filter.  I didn't change the jetting, didn't have to.  I clean it about every 10,000 miles instead of whatever K&N advertises these days, but I have a habit of living at the end of long gravel roads.  The filter has over 90,000 miles on it now, so it has paid for itself a few times.

A K&N thread always brings out the K&N naysayers.  K&N filters are controversial because a lot of people say they pass harmful particles.  People say they find dirt in the intake passages downstream from the filter.  I never have.  I believe that if people have that problem, they are not installing it correctly.  You have to use the sealing grease.  My bike is just shy of the 110,000 mile mark and still uses less than a pint of oil in 3000 miles.  I think if the K&N filter wasn't doing its job it would have shown up in top end wear.

Well before I would say the K&N is good, what oil did you use and how often did you change it? That will affect things too. However I do believe that proper install is very important regardless of the oil used.

I myself have thought about k&n and Uni filters.

You are welcome, Andy.  Another comment I'd make is one other thing I see people do wrong with the K&N is that they over-oil them.

Eldar, I use K&N's oil on the filters.  If you meant engine oil, I have been using BMW dino oil for the last several years, changed every 3,000 miles.

 You're welcome Adny. :D
Long term economics with reusability, and a bit less restriction to improve fuel economy.  Since it has less restriction than stock, the "choking" effect is reduced, allowing the jets to flow less.  An overall leaning effect.  That's my reasoning, anyway.
I guess I should state that I've never used the stock Honda air filter in any of my 750's.   So, I can't do a fair comparison, I guess.

Mick,
For the 550 K&N doesn't make a drop in filter for the stock air box hence the UNI selection, again due to replacement economics.  My view of pod filters for street use is fairly well known for anyone who has followed this forum for a while.  But, a track bike would get K&Ns if I had any concern for high RPM breathing improvement and engine damage from a particulate rich operating environment it was to operated in.  Other wise, it's a velocity stack and frequent rebuilds. ;D

Cheers,

P.S. Sorry for the late response.  I'm getting VERY intermittent access to the forums.
