New Truck
« on: February 06, 2008, 04:50:29 PM »
My old 72 ton conversion 4x4 has developed a considerable rear end whine.
This I found after going through the transmission  :(.

So I decided I was going to find another truck for use till I can resurrect the old 72.
The ring gear and pinion is no longer available for the early (before 72) 3/4 ton rears,
there is a bit of rear frame attention needed also so............

I went out and found a ........69 Half ton 4x4 with a great body, good paint and
being upholstered when I examined it. The most rust free body of the 69-72's I've seen.
Almost to good to go to the woods so if it looks tight in the woods we'll walk. ;D ;D
Same drive line except for the 1/2 ton differentials, and parts are readily available for 12 bolt gm's ;D

That's a gook looking truck.  I love my 72 C20 Custom Camper.  402.  Pull a stump out for ya?  I've got a 72 Blazer lined up with a 383 stroker.  I'm trading a guy a paint job on his other Blazer for it.  There was a cherry 72 Suburban on my street for sale a couple years ago and I kick myself for not buying it every time I think about it.

Did you know the 67-72's are called the "glamour" models?  They were the first recreational trucks with style rather than just utility vehicles.

The period of Chevy trucks you all are talking about, are some fine looking trucks all right. I've always had a yearning for a nice 66' (or so) myself, as far as Chevy's go. I had a neighbor that had a slick one some years ago and I would have liked to have had THAT one. He decided to sell it unexpectedly and I just couldn't swing it at that time. Man, I was sick!

Hey Dustyc, if you run across a good chunk out of the rear of a 69-72 3/4 ton in 410 I need one.
It's the GM H072 (i think that's GM's designation). Mine has a terrible whine now after a bout
with low oil. These are the ones that have a 10 bolt rear inspection cover and the whole
chuck unbolts and comes out the front side with pinion complete. The Pinion also unbolts from
the front side of the chuck.
I have a good 456 chunk if anyone wants it you know.

Sweet truck, I love the pre 73 GM trucks. Our family had a 71 K5 Blazer as the family vehicle (pops bought it new). As for the toasted diff in the other ride, why not swap in a 14 bolt? they fit and are a dime a dozen in the bone yards (lots stronger as well).

Hey Dusterdude, it's no either of the above. It's a differential built like a ford 9" only bigger.
It's an Eaton unit. An H052/H072 is a gm corporate heavy duty full floater axle. It hasn't been put under a pickup since 1972.

They quit with them in 72 cause they were to strong Chris.  ;D Couldn't make any parts money if they last 40 years.  ;D
I think the off roaders call them a third member differential and they're highly sought after.

Richmond Gear doesn't have the ring and pinion either, I also checked with a place called
Randy's Ring and Pinion. I'd sure like to find it though but may have to go to the 14 bolt. Or change the Dana front to 456.

Hey good link!!
I see he listed the 456 as a 457 which it actually is. I just counted the teeth
and did the math.  ;D

I think I'll find a 457 front, this is for the work truck and doesn't need to do
real highway speeds, just jump stumps. ;D

Sexy truck! My dad had one just like it! Ran FOREVER. He paid $500 bucks for it and put something like 280K on it before selling it for $800 :)
