I have to post a pic of us together, now, after our first 10+ mile (20 round trip) ride...
This is me and Delilah on my college campus, where I'll be riding tomorrow, hopefully...

I said it before but it's worth repeating  :o the bike looks GREAT. What kind of windshield is that and do you like it? I want to get one for my 650 but haven't decided what one yet.

It's a National Cycle Street Shield.  I like it a lot, but I'm going to have to change the angle a little so it pushes the air 'up' more instead of funneling it right into my helmet. ::)

It keeps a lot of the wind pressure off my torso, yet  the wind still kinda curls around it so I get good ventilation still from my side zips.  It's minimalistic and still very functional.

This one is a Harley look alike costs about $200 new in NZ but I have seen them on Ebay for less.
Not as wide as Kit's and I've set it up more vertical as the old style cop bikes had them.

Thanks for the info Kit. I definately need air flow, but when i've ridden my 500 at anything above 45ish, the wind starts wanting to turn me into a kite, kinda unnerving for me. I want to be able to ride on the freeway, but without a shield to help deflect the air, just haven't had the guts. I want a windshield that helps to keep a huge portion off me, but won't keep it all off otherwise i'd cook  :o

Hush, I love your bike! I just hope when I am done with my bike it looks as nice as yours or Kits.

Freakin' fed up for today.
Painted my hard bags. At least THAT went well.
Went out to do an oil change. A SIMPLE OIL CHANGE.  Oil filter bolt rounds right off, because I'm using my weight at least to try to turn the sucker.  It's stuck in there GOOD.  UGH.  Ordered a new one.  At least the drain bolt came out okay.  The oil came out looking like mud.  Because I couldn't do the oil filter, I decided to drop the sump.  Apparently I need to take the exhausts off to do this.  :P  Dropped the sump.  The sump looked like it had glitter dumped in it... no flakes bigger than a square mm, anyway.
Cleaned out the sump, but it doesn't wanna go back on. Was so pissed by that point I just needed to take a break.

Now for homework.
I wanted to ride in tomorrow but it's just not happening. :'(
oh well.

did you take any pictures of the nice shiny bits in the sump ??

If you think the oil is like mud - do yourself a big favour - buy some cheap motorcycle oil (who cares what sort) and two cheap oil filters - put in a new filter and oil, then run it for about 2-3 hours riding around- then dump it as soon as possible. let it drain overnight - then do the filter and oil again - then change it at 1000 kilometres again. then normal intervals - there must have been a bit of neglect from the PO.

no good having a shiny bike on the outside - when the inside is full of "MUD" or other nasties   :)

just a thought - have you changed the oil on this thing yet ?

You'll still need to get the old one off Kit, my suggestion is drill through the bit where you rounded it off and stick a small screw or bolt into the hole.
Use a set of Stilsons (um you probably call them pipe wrench) and if you need more leverage slide a big ole bit of pipe over the handle to get a really good grip and turn anti-clockwise, works everytime for me. ;D
Did you remove your filter screen?
It's taht funny looking upside down funnel looking thing with a mesh screen across it.
Mine was like varnished almost closed, not sure why the bike didn't seize, it's only pushed on as I remember and held by 2 rubber rings.
You must have the exhaust pipes that connect across under the motor?
I don't need to remove my pipes to drop my sump.

no pics of the glitter in my sump that I can upload right now...

hadn't changed the filter til this point... will probably take your advice and do it twice.  The last time I'd changed the oil, the bike hadn't been running yet, so I was basically just draining the sump and refilling with new oil.  I used Rotella T (that shell semi-synthetic for diesel engines because pple seem to like it here)  the next and subsequent changes, I'll be using the stuff from Honda to see if I notice a difference.  I used Rotella because it doesn't have lubing additives like for cars, and instead of being really 'synthetic' it's just a highly refined dino oil.  It's supposed to have detergent qualities (and if I can judge by the amount of crap in it, then it does, indeed)

Hush- I cleaned the screen, but it was already pretty clean except for a light coating of grime and a little gasket goo stuff.  My exhaust pipes just run to the inside of the frame a bit (it's a 4-into-2 and it's too narrow to drop the sump through.

How loud are these cam chains supposed to be?  It seems like I'll tighten mine down so it's quiet, then I'll ride 20 miles and by the end it sounds loose again...  WTF?  and the noise never does actually go away. hmm. :(

why it sounds noisy is because you are possibly constantly listening for it... just enjoy the ride and keep it adjusted as per your manual.

does the noise reduce when you pull in the clutch lever ??
while you have the sump off - can you see your primary chains - if so see if they are slack or have lots of movement in them.. pretty sure they cannot be adjusted - but they may have a have a wear limit. how many miles on the speedo.. ?

cam chain tensioner may also be worn enough that no amount of adjusting will reduce the noise....

noise is the same with the clutch lever in and out.  Primary chain looked ok but I'll look again.
only 26000 on the clock.

I'll admit there's some degree of paranoia there... I mean I do worry about getting stuck sitting at school.

There is a primary chain tensioner in there too Kit, if it isn't putting tension on the primary you might get some noise, more likely the cam chain though and if you ever have the need to remove the top of the motor you should definitely replace cam chain and tensioner.
New oil in the motor may quieten the cam down a bit as well but I ;D'm past listening to mine rattle, Hell it just seems like normal engine noise for me now.

Sorry, no real advise on the internals, but for the rounded oil bolt, I've had good luck filing 2 parallel edges and then using vice grips. I'm always paranoid about drilling out screws or bolts as I don't always get it dead center. Good luck however you decide to go!

I'm on night watch at the prison so took my Clymer along and did a lot of reading, I understand a lot more of the stuff you and TT were discussing, I haven't found a cure for my non charging yet but I now know how to test and what to look for.
Anyhow, I do hope you are having some great riding weather and enjoying the long weekend. :D

Tested my regulator, green wire to each yellow, got 5.3,8.6,3.2 and in reverse nil nudda a big fat nothing so i guess we know my regulator is screwed. ;D

yeah, but only because they're diodes so you should have way less resistance the one way, but the big fat 0 is good the other way.

you want low res. in one direction and very high to infinit res. in the other

I thought the diodes were in the rectifier but guess the regulator is in same package...damn I should know that.
Clymer says all results should be same then reverse leads and again all results should be same one set of results will be high--one set will be low but should all be the same?  ???
So is "infinity" 00.00?
Found the diode test setting TT will redo tests in that range......thanks Hush.

OK re-tested and rectifier (in diode range) checks out with all yellow wires at 8.55, re-tested stator wires and still have two showing a grounding
