:D ;D
I just tallied up the mileage (damn busted trip odometer!) we have 84.2 total miles for this trip. :D  She started right up for me every time, too.  It was a very good #$%*ing awesome trip and I am really, really tired. :D

Aw hey Mickey that is just soooo damn awesome, Kit deserves a decent run after all her bikes'issues.
Tu Meki (great) as we say here in NZ, may Delilah continue to become a stronger and totally reliable bike, it makes a huge difference when you can just go out and swing your leg over knowing she will fire up for you.........well done ladies well done. :)

THAT IS AWESOME!!! Kit Delilah is an inspiration to us with a rusty bucket in need of tlc.

Now that you are a 650 Master, I see your wise guidance (hows that for butt kissing  ;D ) I am gonna be redoing the top end on my bike once the paint work is complete (gotta do the paint before it gets too hot). Where did you get your gaskets (DSS is the only place I can find that sells a set, but they don't say what is in it, I've sent them an email asking) and is there anything you wish you would have done but didn't? Just trying to get all my ducks in a row before I tear into it.

Thanks, and seriously, awesome bike!

Brandon

Kit is at work today and it's usually pretty busy on Sundays so it may take her a while to get on here.

I'm wondering how we can go about shortening her kickstand a bit or which one we could swap out, like a 400 or something. I toyed with the idea of just taking the grinder to the bottom, the part that juts out toward the bike when it's down. It sits on the tip of it when the bike is leaning because she lowered it a few inches. Any ideas???

I did research on another thread. cb350s are bolt-on.  Won't look the same, but who cares?

450 stands are an inch longer.  My stand could be bent 'out' a  little but it might fatigue the mounting points.

My 650 Custom had such a lean on it when parked I thought it would fall over so I took it off and realised that over the years the bolt holding the top of the stand to bike had worked loose allowing the bracket to spread thereby lowering the bike.
Just a thought but could you not do something like this (but not by accident)?
If you spread the bracket open like a sandwich with a wrecker bar and added a few washers to take up the slack it would def lower the stand just like those leg trippers they fit on Hardlys. ;D
If it was me I'd take the side stand off and get it heated and bent out to allow the bike to sit lower when resting....but that's just me. ;)

I know this is my 'build' thread and my 'project' thread and there are people who are reading it for technical advice, etc etc... but I wanna devote one post here to my Dad. He and I were chatting last night on the phone about motorcycles, and he was telling me about his 160 Ducati back when he was in high school "and all the other guys had Hondas, he was the only one with a Duc."  Then right after HS he got a new or newish CB350.  That was the bike he rode to New York and Niagra Falls, then to Maryland and Philly from WI  when he was drafted into 'Nam.  It was also the bike he'd tear up Hwy 10 with back home.  I guess they (he and his buddies) had a thing they did where they'd charge up the hill as fast as they could go, passing as many cars as they could.  "because there's space between the oncoming cars and the ones on the right if you zip up the middle of the highway on the line."  :o

Dad never told me stories like THAT when I was a kid.  :o

Dad had that 350 until he had kids on the way, and my mom made him get rid of it... so maybe it's just a little poetic justice that I'm gonna have him ride my 650 a little just to see what it's like.

I've always been really proud of who my dad is as a person, and he's always been my hero.  :D  I'm glad I grew up to be so much like him (wiseass sense of humor getting me in trouble all the time, etc etc)

He and my mom will be visiting here in OR in mid June (the only time you ever want people visiting OR) and the LAST visit was the first time Delilah had started and run, unassisted.  They both admired the work that went into the bike, even though, aesthetically, it wasn't great.

This time, the bike's about done and looks/rides great. :D A major transformation, and I'm glad they'll get to see it.  ;D I think my dad'll be proud.

so yeah... there ya go. :D

eh, it's your thread, do what you want! Besides, it just adds personality.

Your dad sounds like a fun guy, enjoy him while he's around! I'm happy to say I learned how to tinker and fix and build crap from my dad, got my sense of humor from him as well (much to moms dismay  ;) ) He too had a bike when he was a teen,  sold it to get moms wedding ring. Wish I knew what kind it was, I'd buy one and fix it stock just for nostalgia sake. Sadly, he's no longer around. Sorry, not trying to jack your thread with my reminicing. I'm sure they'll be appropriately impressed, you've taken a sad bike and made her into a real looker!

Brandon

P.S. Thank you dad for his service for me! Sadly, the Nam vets didn't get anywhere near the support they deserved.

Maybe we all get our two wheeled love from our genes?
My Dad was a despatch rider during WW2 and rode Indians and Harleys through the Egyptian desert.
One day in my teens he came out to look at my newly purchased Suzuki T350, "mind if I have a go"?
he asked casually, nervously I let him swing his leg over the saddle thinking he'll probably wobble up to the corner and maybe fall off.
ZOOOOOM he barrelled it up to the end of the long street faster than I ever had, did a perfect spin around and roared back, swung off the bike and said "nice bike, don't kill yourself on it"!
I'm still gobsmacked by that evening, our Dads' don't always tell us how "good" they were on bikes I think........OK hijack over. :)

I have a boatload of pictures already, but here's the rolling chassis:

I brought it home Sunday and spent Monday evening sorting parts.  I got a LOT of spare parts, buckets and buckets of them.  Can't get much done during the week because of work, but this weekend I'm going to strip the frame down and prep for a rattlecan job.  I've also got 2 sets of carbs to work through, I will build a set from the best parts of both.

Edit:  I have a build thread on another forum, you can find it here: forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=236 with the title "Humpty Dumpty got nothin' on this sh!t."  I'd direct link you, but I'm a work and SA is blocked due to "obscene/tasteless content."  Yeah, that's SA in a nutshell  ;D

To quote a bannable catchphrase, "There's a front page?"  I used to read the front page, but now I pretty much stick exclusively to the forums.  I also don't read GBS anymore  ;D  There's a wealth of information and really good guys (and a couple of gals) in CA.  Sigtrap's a great mod and there's none of the usual crap posting you see in a lot of auto/cycle forums (SOHC4 being another).

Edit: and because you like PP, here's one I did way back in the day, ended up on the front page.  The topic was "stupid products for stupid people."  I made this into an iron-on, I need to slap it on a t-shirt some day  :P

You are hereby forbidden from posting in my thread. I got a good look at that and spewed coffee all over my laptop. ;D ;D

That so reminds me of how I kept my questionable previous mechanic from riding my bike around for errands when it had to get left at the shop-
he had 'issues' with riding a bike with a 'super L' sticker on the back.  Who knew? :D

GRUH!
So, I take my bike out for a nice ride.  It's cool, I'm enjoying myself immensely.   I go to my school's other campus, my 'regular' campus.  I cruise around and have fun, then head home.  I stop by Honda to pick up new grips or bar ends, something to cut the vibrations my sexy-lookin' renthals were letting right through like snot through cheap kleenexes.

...so I stop at Honda and get some nice grips, I get back on my bike with a ton of people around, and *usually* she's been starting on the first try. Rrrr....rr....r.  Damn hot start #$%* happened again.

I know why, too, I didn't put the bike on the charger and she sat all this week. well and it's still not *quite* charging up to snuff.  Not sure why, even still.  Took her for that 84mi ride and she was at 12.4 afterward...
gave her full WOT a few times on my ride.... don't tell the wife... up to 7.5k for awhile (yay, 45+ in 2nd!) but still the battery acted like #$%*. :P

oh well.

Put on the new grips.  Hope they help me keep a good grip on the throttle.
I've noticed that at 6-8k, there's a LOT of handlebar vibration.  Doesn't matter what speed.  Hence the new grips... but I don't have the stock bar-end weights, either. (look at the parts fiche, they're there...) Vibration's in the footpegs, too, so I know it's not just the front end.  Real high-pitched, make-yer-hands-numb vibration.  Makes it hard to maintain the full WOT the bike needs to stay at 65+ mph.  (and even then it feels like the throttle grip slides through my glove so I need to adjust again and again and again).

..is that normal?

no,not really normal I would say....are all the engine bolts tight that hold it in the frame..??
and having to give WOT for 65mph is not normal either...WOT in 5th gear should give ya around 105/110mph....

I remember hush saying something about adjusting his pick up plate for the ignition,he also was running way to slow at WOT ...
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

hmm.... I'm not really sure now if I was in 5th or 4th.  I so rarely leave 3rd, unless I'm really cranking it out... maybe I just didn't think about it.  Well #$%* that's something to think about this weekend when we go out...

FWIW, though, all the engine mount bolts are tight. :P I know this cuz a bunch of them are involved in holding on the case guards.

if your timing is a little to advanced  or the advancer isn't working right it can cost ya top end speed for sure, heck even the vibration can be a result of that, being it that the engine isn't running happy at high rpm then....mine does vibrate a little at top rpm,but not so bad that i want to replace grips etc..  and i'm sitting right on the frame.. :o
