I know someone else will probably have a heart attack with my saying this, but I used about 2' of gas line, grabbed my tank and set it backward on the seat, then ran tie-down soft straps over the tank, one hooked to the frame somewhere, up through the 'neck' over the top, then down through the bolt hole in the back of the tank, and tied to the case guard.  I also stuck a rag under the petcock just to make sure I didn't get gas on my seat (but it never did leak)

Worked fine for me.

Well, "D" must have heard our discussions about getting a new rotor...
...and she has really good timing.

I had a weird feeling about riding today, but decided to anyway, because I had so much fun on my solo trip yesterday.  So I suited up and rode anyway.  D started pretty easily (I really need to look at/replace that accel pump diaphragm...) and warmed up real fast.  That was all very good for me.  I think she really likes the high octane gas.

Anyway, the ride in was awesome and mostly uneventful.   'cept at that one light where I grabbed a wrist full of throttle on the green and felt the front end go light.  THAT was fun. :D

So, I get to the hospital's free motorcycle lot and not 5' from my spot, the bike just dies.  Loses all power, stops running, the oil light's on, just like if I flicked the switch 'off'.  Hell, maybe I did, because I kept hitting the starter button, and hitting the starter button, and it spun nice and fast, but didn't start.  The switch was off when I looked at it to make sure  :o ??? but I have no idea how or when or why that happened.  I just hope the bike starts up for me on my way home. :-\

I just send my rotor for rebuild this week. I used the rear axle plus a strap wrench. I had to grease the end of the axle and the treads before it would go.

A couple of pages back I said it was an 18mm x 1.5 mm. At least that is what they sell you if you buy a puller.

I guess it's time to get a new rotor. I think while we are at it, we'll go for the new stator too and pick up a R/R from the Oregon guy. I'd like the electrics to be new on this bike since you will be riding it so much and have no backup bike. Things degrade over the years and with everything being 30yo, I think it's high time she gets this totally fixed. We can put the old R/R on Samson since it is still working. It's not that big of a deal if he gets out of wack. He won't be ready to run for a long time anyway.  ;D

I'd like you to be able to know that she will start when you need her to.  :-*

As for everything else, she is running like a banshee. One thing, is there a way to not have so much travel on the throttle? What I mean is, Kit is right, if you want to really crank her out on the highway, you almost have to regrip the throttle so your not twisted under the bars. Do the throttle cables stretch? Is there a little something that could get adjusted? Or are they just like that?  ???

the throttle cables can't be stretched, they're brand new.  They have the factory spec amount of play, actually, the minimum, at the 'pull' cable and minimal shifting between the 'push' cable being pushed all the way in and where you start feeling the pull cable opening the throttle.

I think that's just the way it is, because I gave it a wristful at a light this morning and lightened my front tire.

I used a borrowed rear axle to remove my rotor and a trailer tie down to secure the thing from spinning while I was trying to remove it and when I put the borrowed one back on.
I'd def do the rotor but the stator can probably wait little miss money bags. :)

Well, usually we don't have the extra $$ just lying around but I got a raise and a bonus on this paycheck.  ;D I also claimed 11 for withholding too so I get more of it back now instead of it going for taxes. So, we have the extra loot to do it all at once if Kit wants to. Otherwise, I guess I could be like a typical chick and just buy shoes with it all but that doesn't seem quite right, does it? Yeah, I knew you'd see my way is better.  :D

So, I'm gonna give it a shot today in getting the rotor off of Samson while Kit is at work. I have to go get a bolt at the hardware store yet. I can't get too deep into anything else today because I'm on-call for 16 hrs at the hospital. No getting greasy.  :( This should be an interesting display of mumbled swear words since there are so many kids in the area.

I'm ordering Kit an accelerator pump rebuild kit for her carb today. I'm wondering, while I'm on there, if I should get her some new brushes for the rotor, too? She has about 1/8" or less to the scribe marks. Is this a good time to just do them as well?

New brushes would be ideal, but have you checked to see if Samson's brushes are better off then Delilah's?   Save a few bucks by transplanting them maybe.

You've got the pipes off Samson so the axle will just pull out with nothing to hit (try it pipes on..fun not!) just relax the axle adjustment bolts and slide it out, it will fit perfectly into rotor thread.

For the last time, Samson is not a donor bike.  :D

So, like Kit said, I got called in to work for about 7 hrs today. I took some thai iced tea into her during her lunch, we were sitting for about 15 min and my pager went off. I never even got out to the garage to do anything on Kit's bike.  :( I did get the accel pump kit and brushes ordered though, I guess that's something.  :)

We're gonna go with the guy from feebay on the rotor/stator rebuilds. $140 for both and supposed to be a 1 week turn around time.  8) Kit emailed the guy over the weekend and he got back to her pretty quickly and gave her some good info and let her know that they have a lot of experience rebuilding these. I like good customer service and proven experience. Either way, Sampson's is popped so, even if Delilah shows no difference when we swap the parts, we will still have a good set for him. If we end up needing them and they make a difference, it gives us a chance to see if these guys do the good work they claim to do so we can pass along the info to the forum.

If my bikes' charging faults return I may want that guy's number Mickey/Kit, $140 US even when converted to Kiwi (or Hungarian zloties)  ;D is still worth the piece of mind you'll get knowing it's as good as it can get.

so I'm home  today for my wednesday off.  unfortunately I'm also sorta under the weather, so I'm puttering around with the bike on and off, generally taking it easy. 

Took Sammy's kickstand to our local machine shop and asked them about cutting/welding it.  They said $30, and I said "Good deal." so I left it with them, to take off 3/4".  I figured that was erring on the safe side.  I can handle the bike sitting up a little tall (lord knows it is now) but I didn't wanna risk it being too short.  The welder was also really cool about my discussing it with him, saying 'this side of the spring attachment, maybe about here'.  Some of those guys get really pissy when a girl starts talking about what she's looking for or expecting, as if she doesn't know what she's talking about, but this guy was cool and thanked me for my input.

The shop called today and said they were done, that the kickstand took to welding really well.  Getting it back, I was impressed.  The bead was done stack-of-dimes style and turned out really smooth.  It looked so good that I pulled out the little rubber tongue and cleaned it with rubber/vinyl cleaner I have around, cleaned up the kickstand and gave it a quick shot of black paint.  Sure it'll be perfectly invisible under the bike, but so much of the bike looks nice and shiny, I figured this might as well match for a while.

MickeyX and I were working last night on taking the rotor off, and we got the bolt out that holds it on the crankshaft... now I'm still working actually getting the rotor off.  Bugger just doesn't wanna budge, and me without an air impact wrench.  I've got an impact driver, but I dunno that that's what was really intended for this.

Finishing my cold soda and going back out.  I don't wanna do garage work in shorts, but it's so damn hot I might have to if I don't want to burst into flames just sitting there.

Use the force Luke....I mean use the impact driver Kit, it's perfect for this job, just don't wail on it heaps as the rotor is magnetic and striking it can take some of that away (in case you want to use it on S) but a few good cracks should have that sucker moving, or use a long bar on your socket to give you some good leverage.

Well, as with most things, it took both of us to get this thang accomplished.  :D

The rotor/stator service is ordered; tomorrow I send the cores in to get done. Ordered the reg/rectifier from Tony Weeks, too. (oregon motorcycle parts) so there you have it.

Put the kickstand on Delilah.  I wish I could figure out why it feels like the kickstand comes a long ways forward.  The long one did, too.  Bike now rests on the full length of the stand instead of just the pointy tip, just seems odd that it rests on the rear edge.  Oh well.  Bike leans the way it's supposed to, now, though, so I'm a happy camper. :)  No more vertical parking anymore unless I'm actually on an uphill slope.
