National Cycle Street Shield EX. She really likes it.  :)

My wife and I each have one of those.  Nice shield all around, not too big, not too small, nice lines.  No complaints except that her VLX tends to whistle at certain speeds due to the gap between the shield and her headlight.  I've been promising to make a filler piece of some kind but really it's not a big priority to either of us :)

That bike is looking great crabby "Old Timer".  Nice change in the title, I do not think you are a newbie any longer.  Oh wait, I said that before, lol.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

just thought I'd add a nudge to this to let people know I'm going to be streamlining this thread a little so it's more of a step-by-step log of this build than an ongoing 650 related bit of banter.  Some banter I have to keep, though, like at least 2/3 of the smartass comments.

Delilah has become my commutermobile for school, as I'm going 4 days/week, or 60 mi/week... She's become pretty reliable in spite of my "work". :D  One o' these days I'm going to pull the carb isolators off Samson and soak them in Xylene and Wintergreen, and replace the ones on Delilah... I'm also going to figure out that durn leak down by the oil pump... maybe also the top end leak... but I'm in no big hurry. She's reliable and fun, and that's all I'm worried about. 

On cold mornings the starter clutch spins free occasionally, but once the oil's warm I haven't got any problems with that... That's a little more worrying but because she still starts and works... I'm still not that worried.

Today was the first commuting morning in the past two weeks where it hasn't been raining or blowing me off the side of the road and I hit my zen spot.  I really felt like all was right with the world and all of this... all of the last... what, 37 prior pages and the bull#$%* before that was all worth it.  I got home, parked her and just sat on the seat, pondering the bike.  I know, being an old bike, she will probably need more work somewhere down the line.  I know also that someday there may be something I cannot fix...
but for now, I am intensely happy with my bike, and all I've done to get it where it is today.

Good on ya, girl.  Makes me a bit sad that Bikey is down for electrical problems, again.

Good thoughts Kit, my old "Blondie" is ultra reliable and I have no hesitation in going for long jaunts on her, I only keep my project build open as I add bits, best of luck with the editing. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Yup Rina did the starter clutch thing when she first woke up from the winter slumber.  No troubles since.

Just had a go-round with about six different things all one right after the other.

Fixed the hot starting problem by replacing the wire from solenoid to starter motor- when it got hot, it increased the wire's internal resistance enough to prevent adequate power to turn the starter motor fast enough.

While I had the sprocket cover off, I thought "Hey, the oil pump has been seeping for awhile.  I should fix that."

So then there was BS finding the correct o-rings, etc etc.
I put the cover back on and crap happened. By "crap" I mean, the oil pressure light wouldn't go out this morning when I got on to go to school.  I couldn't hear anything but had visions of Bad Things Happening, so took the car instead.  Stopped by Honda to get the oil pressure sensor I'd ordered.

Popped the cover off and it was immediately obvious what ruined my day.  Somehow the oil pressure sensor's wire got pinched/destroyed when I put the cover on. Great.  Samson's stator measured out just fine, though, so I spent an hour or two swapping everything over.  Started 'er up.  Flawless. Oil light went right out, etc etc.  Good times!

Decided that before I really button everything up, I should probably check the resistance between the black and white brushes.  10 something. WTF.
Loosened. Tightened. 15 something. GRR.

Took the alternator cover/stator off.  scuffed the sliprings (again) cleaned up the brushes. Sprayed a little electronics cleaner on and worked everything around enough to clean off the ton of carbon dust that was all over everywhere.  Tested brushes individually- about half an ohm resistance there.  That's ok.
Put everything back together- 6.4 ohms! I can live with that! (that's about 5 and the half ohm each wire)

buttoned the puppy back up and started 'er again just to make sure. oil light went out again (yay!) changed the turn signal bulb that blew its 'turn' filament, and finished up. 


AAAAhhhhhhh.

Sounds like you've gotten atop of most everything. One thing to note, though, is I've never gotten a consistent reading through the brushes to the rotor; I've always had to measure directly on the slip rings to get any kind of accurate reading. :)

yeah, that's true, but if you measure from black and white connectors, you have an  idea of what the resistance is between the wires AND the sliprings, so you know if there's something afoot in the system somewhere. I had a spontaneous bout of non-charging even with the new rotor- the carbon (or something?) had interfered and resistance was past 10 ohms at the connector.  Just cuz the rotor checks out doesn't mean the system checks out. ;)

because electrics make sense to me.  Carbs do not.  I figured you might have slightly more access to donor carbs etc than I would but maybe not. :-\

Put a 750 carb on one side and a 500 on the other, it will drive her insane. ;D

Ha. Well. Thing is, this isn't pro bono work, so I'm hoping it gets done.  With 3/4 time class credits and work, I haven't had any time to work on bikes. Delilah's fiddling was a necessity that ate into homework time because I need to have one bike to get me to school, at least.

Lola's been insured and licensed for about a month now, so we're just waiting on the carb. :P

just PM'ed you kit- i lot of what i was doing was pro bono work, actually. i was treating your bike being in my shop more like helping a friend rather than working on a customer bike. i think we crossed wires a little bit in regards to how much you wanted me to actually do. i was under the impression you weren't trying to pay me for things you could do yourself. sorry.

Oop yeah, sorry. No, you're right.  I think the carb and tuning is all you because I have a really hard time wrapping my head around that stuff.  The electrics I figured out over the course of the last couple years (i.e the hot start problem) and that's the only way I have the grasp of it I do.

You ain't just blowing smoke there, brother. :D I try to find the time to learn more but I'm just so busy most of the time. I understand Kit's 650 better than I do the 350 though. It doesn't make any sense but there you have it.

It had to be close to 80F today, Hush. Unfortunately, this time of year is busier for me.  :-\ Kit's bike is back on as far as I know. I'll deal with the wiring on the one she took out when I have time. We work together really well on this stuff. I just wish I had time to help her more. We are maxed out these days.
