We have a set of leather Hondaline bags to put on ebay too. Like I said, it's like being on a merry-go-round.

I can't wait to see what she does with the hardbag set. We already were at the store today and picked up some goodies for the restoration.

...so here's the new challenge. I'm figuring on laying fiberglass reinforcement behind the damaged corner, and then bondoing up top, then primer and touchup paint a little higher than the rest, press gold leaf paint into the scratches through the pinstriping, touch some clearcoat over the leaf to bring it up to the level of the rest of the touchup... then sand, smooth, wax. 'least that's the plan, anyway.

We'll see.

Well here we go...
Went for a ride today because I just couldn't help myself!

I knew she'd always start when I needed her to, so off we went.

I got a cell phone pic while we were at the Honda dealership.
It's not great, but here it is:

She behaved great for me, even when the weather didn't.

RAIN, then HAIL...
BTW, props for whoever put the bug in my ear about gloves with armored knuckles. My fingers and the backs of my hands stung like hell, but my knuckles were fine!

Your bike looks beautiful Kit and to hear she is performing for you finally is music to my 650 owners ears.

Damn you know what this means eh, yep I gotta go buy a new solenoid to double test the theory.

So when I took the bike out for a spin, it seemed to hold back a bit in 1st and 2nd gear. Like it really wanted to let it rip but couldn't. Otherwise, tons of power and speed and immediate response. Is it normal for it to act that way? I think it runs great but I'm just curious since this is the 1st bike like this for both of us.

So what RPM do you tend to shif at MickeyX?

At 4-5K rpm it starts to pull nice.
From 6k-9K the pull is VERY noticeable.

These are high winding motors, they really like the RPM's.
Just be sure to watch your tach.
In 1st and 2nd gears the RPM's can REALLY get out of hand fast past 6k.
The howl at 9-10k is AWESOME with a good 4-1.
Although I have to say I actually prefer a 4-4 as far as sound goes.

I have 16/39 front and rear sprockets...
1st gear will do 45mph+ on my bike.

At about 5k rpm in 1st, I was doing around 25mph. Crankin' on the throttle more didn't give me anymore speed really. 2nd gear at 5k rpm I hit almost 40. I'm feelin' it holding back for some reason. In 3rd and up, she screams and wants more at any rpm. The feel between 1/2 and 3-5 is very different. Lately though, I'm used to being on my Sportster so maybe it just seems weird to me because of the vast diff in bikes. ?? Case in point... Compared to the Suzuki Savage 650 I used to have, this bike zoooooooms. Maybe it's all in my perception of it?

I did get a thumbs up and little "hey!" from one guy as I rode past his house. He kinda had that... I remember the days, before I was married with 2.3 kids and an SUV... look in his eyes.

Mickey try this, remove the air filter cover altogether and replace with 2 very wide washers to hold the filter in place.
Now take it for a spin and see if any change, I've discovered by checking out other sites and mucking
around with my 79 that they don't breath at all well.
This can't hurt and if it detracts from performance you can just slap the cover back on no harm done.
The system may have been set up to restrict the bikes performance as a gas saver during the petrol crisis, same reason my speedo only goes up to 80mph to try to trick me into believing any 650 worth it's tires couldn't crack 100mph.

Not sure how much water she will swallow if you get caught in the rain again, we don't get a lot of rain around here.

first 2 gears are fairly close together...after that they stretch abit wider,thus giving you more feeling of a good pull......

at least that's my 00.2 cents.......

oh,i agree....running an open filter box gives ya way better airflow to the motor....might wanna check the jetting,though....
then again,kit stated somewhere that the old airbox lid was mangled up and then later duct-taped together,so who knows,it might be jetted for open lid already....

Yeah Marti I totally agree, 1st and second are like crawler gears in a truck, designed just to get you moving forwards...after that it's open season on power.

Sure miss that 6th gear though!

Kit has a replacement cover on it. The orig one had a bunch of holes drilled in it. (besides the fact that the PO had mangled the bolts so you couldn't tighten it or take it off) We may try taking it off to see what happens.

Had a great ride today. Kit is feeling much better out on the road and the bike behaved. As soon as we got back, we pulled the covers off the left side and checked things again. We will then recheck once she is cool, no battery tender on in between. I have a sneeking suspicion we may need to redo the wires and connectors from the brushes. That may be part of our "hot start" culprit. If we do, we will just get new brushes too.

Haha. Yeah. We were out for a few hours and had a little break 1/2 way to just chill and discuss how the ride was going. It's hard for me to hear her bike over mine so I wanted to see if she was feeling/hearing anything unusual. I also wanted to make sure she was still comfortable out among the traffic. All was well and the bike started right up, just needed a little choke for a few minutes by then.

I moved the rest of this post to the "hot start" thread.
