Headlight Problem on a '74K
« on: February 07, 2008, 07:23:40 PM »
I have checked all through the forum for this question, and I am still lost..

My headlight has majically stopped working. I know that when I bought the bike the guy had it wired directly for the headlight to work, meaning I think it was hooked up straight to the power, and he told me to change it before I got to far in the renovation process. I got into the nest and saw how he had it wired, and disconnected it. I saw the three wires coming off the headlight harness, Green, White, and Blue. I looked through the maze of wires and saw the same three couplings with a hole vacant for the wires to hook up too. Gave them a little shot of electrical contact cleaner, hooked them up then presto, it works like a charm. My left switch, containing the Hi/Lo beam, worked but was slighty stiff. So I disconnected it sprayed and cleaned out all the dirt and grim, and the switch moves smoothly now. Gave it a few flips up and down. After I did it a few times, the headlight shut off, and it quit working. Checked the switch, checked the wiring to the headlight nothing out of order. Hooked the headlight to an ohm meter, and it's showing good. But it doesn't work.

I started thinking that it was all in my switch, but I took it apart and found nothing out of order. So I decided to go to AutoZone and pick me up another light. Hooked it up and it worked like a charm, so I thought maybe my other headlight was to blame. Gave it a few flips of the Hi/Lo switch worked a few times then BLOOP, it went out again.. Checked my dimmer switch back and forth everything still works; Tail light, break, turn signals, everything still works, except the headlight.

Not sure what to do. And I don't want to have to buy another switch..

All the fuses are in order and as they should be, I don't know of the exact ampege of what it is supposed to be. I know that I blew a fuse while trying to wire the turn signals and break light, but I replaced it with a 15a fuse, which the rest look exactly like, and like I said everything works except for that blasted headlight..

Any Suggestions??

Thanks

check the rh switch. If your lights are supposed to be on all the time the starter button disconnects them when you go to start

I have tried it with the engine running, and the key just in the ON position. It doesn't work. The RH switch acts as a dimmer or ON/OFF switch to I can decide whether or not I want the lights on or not, and while checking all the wiring and what not, I would also slide it back and forth, to see that all the lights would dim off and on, but nothing happened with the headlight

Sorry your post didnt make sense, the high/low should be on the LH switch and there should be either an on/off or nothing on the RH switch. If playing with the RH switch makes the light go dim thats where your problem is
