master cylinder rebuild...help!
« on: August 08, 2005, 09:11:49 AM »
question in two parts:

1) is there a brand or type of snap-ring removal tool that you guys have used to reach the snap ring in the 750 master cylinder? my jaws were too short / flared to soon to reach it, and needless to say it was pretty frustrating. the other brands i looked at all looked similar. and...

2) to make matters worse, it was all rusty underneath the boot, where the snap ring sits. Any suggestions on how to get rid of that orange crud so i don't have to wrangle the snap ring off damaging the actual sylinder in the process? WD40 and carb cleaner (no worries, the rubber's all going to be replaced) couldn't do the trick.

Thanks all!!

Try using an engineers scriber or similar.
You can hook one end of the ring & wind the ring out.
To clean up the crud, I use metho & very fine wet & dry.

After driving myself nuts, I went to Sears and bought these, the smaller ones did the trick.

Like you bob, I got angry and went to sears to buy the tool...Luck would hav it that I also bought a 4 piece pick set too. the picks get them rings out in just a second or two...I found it far easier than the ring tool

I have one with four different tips (straight, angled etc). I filed the straight tip (made out of aluminium) until it fit, but I would rather have bought the tool if I had it available. You know, when you have planned to rebuild the caliper, your HAVE to rebuild the caliper. No waiting until tomorrow...  ;D

wow thanks guys! i need to go to sears tonight anyway to get a better hex wrench too. yeah, pretty unproductive weekend, as i had to put the badly sealed fork back on the bike, as i couldn't get it apart, AND refill my crappy master cylinder. good thing my 550 was sitting next to the 750, in perfect running order to get me to work today :)

When I rebuilt my front master cylinder I could'nt find a siutable pair of snap ring pliers so I bought the interchangeable tip set at
the local harbor freight store and used a grinder to modify them until they would fit down inside the cylinder. total cost was around $5.00.
