cb400f Exhaust- Opinions
« on: February 07, 2008, 02:58:20 PM »
So, I've been looking at picking up the 400f mac exhaust and I know that mac 'quality' isn't top notch, but I was wondering if anyone out there has been using it or if they know of a better alternative. My stock muffler is in great shape, but the header is a little wonky. I tried the search here, but looks like it is disabled.

cheers!

Exhaust for the 400f?  The stock headers are probably the coolest exhaust pipes ever made for a SOHC4.  Heart and soul of the 400f.  IMHO, fix / pretty up your headers or find something used, new OEM, or new patterned off of the OEM pipes.  Check with David Silver Spares or TTR400.

I'm with eurban on this.

Bide your time and find a good, used set of stock 400F headers.  They're a huge part of the appeal of the 400, IMO.

I know, I know. The mac's look the same as OEM. OEM parts go for MAJOR bucks and I'm about 20 years away from ever being able to drop that kind of coin on exhaust. I was wondering if there were comparable headers/systems besides the mac that maintain the look of the original.

and DSS sells the pattern exhaust for just under a note which is probably a bit steep, but maybe I'm just being unrealistic.

DSS seems to have the OEM system for about $750us and a pattern system using some oem parts for $690us.  Not much savings for the pattern parts!

Just keep an eye out on ebay.  Regardless of what some may say, there are still good deals to be had there, sometimes you just have to wait a little longer depending on what you want.  Especially if you look for incorrectly listed or misspelled items.

Do you have a picture of the mac system for the 400F?  I can't seem to find one anywhere.  They don't even have one on their website, just "no picture available".

but if you figure in shipping and VAT it's a bit more.

Found a new one, I never knew about before. At least classics.
In the Jan/Feb issue of Motorcycle Classics,There's an ad for a
Leo Vince/Sito exhaust for the CB400F that looks like the
original in the picture. Haven't checked it out yet.
Even says Parts Unlimited.  Might be a DSS or the DSS is one of these

I have to disagree with you on that.  The Mac system looks nothing like the OEM 400F exhaust.

nothing like it? Have you seen it mounted? They make the same one for the 350f and its the same sweeping header. Not IDENTICAL, but really similar.

But hey- I could be blind!

Don't keep them unused for too long- they have a nasty habit of rusting through from the inside about 2/3rds of the way down! Or fill them with oil before storing.

I hate to keep harping on the subject, but that Mac is not a sweeping header.  It's four straight header pipes with one sharp bend at the bottom.  I don't have a problem with them, and if it works for you that's great, but the Mac system is not a replica of the stock 400F exhaust.  It's just a standard style for aftermarket 4-1 systems.

Okay, I'll leave it alone now. ;D ;D

Well, gordon, I should be taking your word! I've only seen them on the 350f and I thought they looked 'swept'. I guess I'm just dissapointed and maybe I will have to sacrifice finishing a 750 project to get the 400 exhaust. I also need to do a head gasket & rings, so maybe I should jsut keep an eye out for an OEM header. I dont think DSS sells just that.

I’m in England and I’m making a piece of furniture out of the pipes when I get enough of them. I don’t know how it works in your country but the bloke who did the valuation on my bike for agreed insurance value, told me original pipes are a must for the 400/4 or the valuation would be much less.
I got my NOS system from DSS and you won’t have to pay VAT if you live outside the EEC.

Cheers

I'd have to agree with you looking at the the photo of a MAC system.

What diameter are the primary header tubes on the 400F?
