For SOHC parts, the answer is in our own hands. Buy and sell only on the sales section of this site.

Sellers can leave negative retalitory feedback. I just got nailed by crcycle1 and some know this looser for not sending the right items!!

The feedback change isn't supposed to go into effect until May.  So yes, sellers can still leave neutrals and negatives for now, as you just found out.

Aside from getting a bigger audience (hard to imagine there are SOHC owners who still don't know about this place), I think a big problem is folks don't know what a part is worth.  You kind of find out at an auction- it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

There are many bike breakers that doesn't know about this forum. They just buy bikes and break them to make a profit, and let the buyers bid and set up the final price.

E-bay is a good starting point for finding out prices, but some people get real stupid at auctions,I think that if someone has a part or is looking for a part here, communication is the way to go,If you have a part for sale state a price,if the buyer thinks it's too high he can PM and make an offer for a lower price, not every-one is going to get rich this way but someone who is looking for something is going to be happy to find what they want at an agreed price and not have to deal with E-bay and Paypal fees and B###  S###......and is'n it what this forum is all about to help or get help from fellow members

If you have a question about something......ask it !
When the seller answers ........let him know whether you still want it or not !
If you receive something .....let the seller know you got it !

I am amazed by the amount of buyers that would like feedback when their payment arrives..

it is supposed to happen after the transaction, not near the beginning & it is optional..

I think it is great to sell on here but could lead to a lot of bickering and name calling.. which will take up a lot of room..

ebay up till now had a system that sort of sorted things out to a large degree.

Also I think there are quite a few owners here that may not want to pay the going rates and that would cause friction.. I mean do you really want to sell a sidecover on here for 80 if you can get 125 somewhere else??

Ebay is struggling to appeal to very many people these days.  From a business perspective the ebay rates are excessively high - WAY high - if we sold everything on ebay we'd have to increase prices at least 10% to cover the extra costs.  Ebay stores are even MORE expensive.  The cost of an ebay store is outrageous compared to the cost of a shopping cart web site.

Ebay has become a haven for psuedo-businesses - the vast majority of the ebay stores are not companies, but individuals posing as companies.

Next time you get a shipment from an ebay store sale, run the address in Yahoo Maps and see how many of these addresses are residences.

Far too many of the entities selling on ebay do not even stock the product they are selling.  Large numbers of them sell then figure out how to get the product they just sold.  How many of you have been bitten by a seller taking 2-3 weeks to ship a new item?  Well guess what - most of the delay is them getting the product...

Ebay support is second rate at best - reaching a real person is very time-consuming.

Craigslist sites (and similar sites) have become much more popular these days.  It's no wonder why.

It might be interesting to see, if the MS/Yahoo deal goes through, if they don't try something to challenge eBay some time down the road. I'm surprised Google hasn't done more.

This doesn't relate to getting good parts OR good prices, I've found.  I've gotten far better parts on eBay than what I have gotten from members of this forum.  Not to say I didn't get some bad parts from eBay, too.
Sadly, there are forum members here that simply view the forum members as an income source as well as a free information source.  So, it is still very much "buyer beware".

The parts for sale forum here has NO feedback mechanism.  There is simply no way to tell beforehand, who you are dealing with.  At least with eBay, there is SOME metric, however flawed.

If we wanted(and Glenn wanted), this site could be the place for SOHC parts.  The site could be advertised.  We could work out some kind of commission for the sales that would go to the site/Glenn, come up with a feedback mechanism attached to our profile,  advertise by creating an ebay auction for information "How to save big on SOHC parts" or however we want to promote it(price usually draws the most people), with info pointing buyers here.

Just thinking.

2 of the many reasons:

If I sent you some sandcast cases after you paid by paypal & did not use deivery confirmation (or other safeguard) and you got them, then lied and said they never came, paypal would do a chargeback.. seller ends up with nothing!! actually he is out the cases & shipping..

If a paypal payment came to my account the money does not clear for a few days..

There are many more, puls it is owned by ebay, that in itself should tell you they are not ideal to deal with..(thinking DeadHelp here)..

<The parts for sale forum here has NO feedback mechanism.  There is simply no way to tell beforehand, who you are dealing with.  At least with eBay, there is SOME metric, however flawed.>

Isn't that what the good folks - bad folks section is to be used for?
Steve
Perhaps.  But, I thought that "Bad folks" was mainly for established businesses.  However, it kinda proves the point.  :(    The individual was/is listed in the good folks forum.  Maybe I'm just hated.  ???   :-\   ;D

The parts I got had rather obvious crash damage, not mentioned beforehand.  I took the experience as a lesson learned.  The equivalent parts I got off eBay, while a bit more expensive, were at least usable.  As it is, I live on hope that I'll be able to make a fixture to rework the bent parts into something usable on another bike.  I can reshape metal.  But, doing so without marking the chrome is the real challenge. So, the cheaper parts I got from a forum member will be far more expensive in the long term, if I can use them at all.  Oh well, live and learn.  I blame myself, too.  I should have been more wary of the vague description and poor pictures hiding the damage, beforehand.  I simply placed trust in a forum member, which was, in hindsight, unwarranted.  I certainly believe it was not the norm.  But, it can still, obviously, happen.  So, be warned.

enough ranting...

Llyod,

Ive sent a part to a Forum member and never heard form him again (no money as well). I DID post a warning to others but the member in question vanished. Does this mean I wont sell parts to Forum members? No of course not...there will always be exceptions either here or Ebay. Part of the doing business on the Internet I think. Overall Ive had great experience with Forum members selling me items and I have no complaints.

Cheers
Andy

Well it gets worse. I shipped a turntable and had confirmed delivery and emails to that effect from the seller. PayPal has a chargeback time limit. At 85 days the guy says he does not like the unit and wants to return it. He used AMEX via PayPal. He charged back through AMEX and when I complained to PayPal that the chargeback came later than allowed. They told me the AMEX supercedes the PayPal guidelines. I was out $80.00 and no turntable to resell. When I buy thru PayPal, I use AMEX.
I sell MuscleCar parts on and off, I no longer take PayPal.
