Either way, you're a good man, Cville.  I would trust you to do business with you anytime.

(Hey, wait.  What if this whole story was an elaborate invention to get us to trust Cville so that he could turn around and scam us like what's-his-face did to Derek?  Hmmmm.... ;D)

Seriously, I think we all respect your sense of decency.  Tell your wife she's a lucky woman.

Maybe I'm vengeful - but certainly not immature... ask my children... they'll tell you what a GHOF I am  ;D ;D

I know it's already said and done, but I respect what you have done, but that bike would not have left my posession in any sort of running order, and would have had several little things disconnected and unadjusted to boot.... just so the new owner would at least have to get his head around it or pay someone else to sort it out....or even sell it back to you maybe...

Thanks guys.  My wife pointed out last night that the 550 has been waiting for me to get motivated to get it tuned up and the tank redone so I acid washed the inside and have it soaking in Evapo-rust right now.  Gonna start looking for someone that can put some fresh olive and black on her.

I did take a video of the ol' F starting up and hitting redline but don't know how to get it posted to you tube yet.  Gonna work on that and share just for the fun of it.

wow..this has been a stunning tale to say the least.  Cville, thanks for sharing all of the highs and lows you've endured.  what you were able to do with that bike was impressive to say the least.  part of me thinks that this comes down to the right old kook living in the right state to get away with 'reclaiming' his bike after parting with it, what, 15 years ago?  but to me it seems that the evidence points in another direction..a man who knew an opportunity when he saw it.  especially his knowing the DMV laws of his state so well as to lay claim to this motorcycle after listing it as 'sold' to the dmv and the failure of that workshop to register it.  and the part where he insisted that he wasn't buying the bike from you but paying for your work...especially since he signed the title over as 'sold' long ago.  man, that's either insanity or a con-man at work.  notice he didn't put up a stink with the shop that did the work? that's because they have more resources and business savvy (sorry cville) than a garage hobbyist.  but in the end, what could have been a thorn in your side for god knows how long has been loaded onto a trailer and gone from your life.  here's hoping that bike doesn't end up on ebay some day soon with a $1,500 reserve.  perhaps he just wants to pass it along to a son or grandkid.  either way Cville, there's another bike waiting for the likes of you to come along.  hope the two of you find one another soon!

mr ville... i've been trying to clean up my act a bit lately... you know, not act like an a$$ to every person that pisses me off.  you can't go around life, hating everyone and anything that affects you adversely.
you're an inspiration for self control and patience.
thanks

james, you`re a better man than i am,that bike would have left my garage in pieces.

I just couldn't do that to a bike in that good condition.  It'd be sacrilege and I'd never be able to sleep thinking about it.

Can't rememeber if I mentioned that the guy almost had tears in his eye when he got out of the truck.  In my previous distain for the situation that minute detail had escaped me.  When I mentioned it to my wife a few hours later, she pointed out that it's not a small detail at all.  The one moment pretty much alleviates my distaste for the situation (ok maybe 90% of it) becuase it shows that he had no ill intent or was a very convincing actor.

His friend told me (while he was admiring the 550 which he later told me he had the same model before the 750) that the guy is slowly decaying from cancer and that the mere idea of this bike had brought him his first smiles in months for the week while waiting to get it.

The more I think about it, the less agrivated I am.  I do appreciate everyone's input but I am very glad to have gone about this as I did.

Oh, I've started sleeping through the night again so maybe that's helping with my outlook on this ;D

Very good deal! You're still going to spend some cash, but heck.....I paid $800 for mine and the only thing that was good was the engine.

....fun!!

Yep, I'm thinking you are right.
My daughter had cancer when she was 18 so I know how horrid it is for the person and everyone around them. If this guy really was dying of cancer and you gave him a means to smile again then you did more for him than any doctor ever could have. The will to live was what determined my daughter's fate and hopefully this guy's fate too.
You done good, my friend.  Now get back to work on your other bikes!

It's very easy to do the right thing most of the time.  Character is defined in those moments when the right thing is not easy.

in my defense medic... i do tend to make light of death.  mom is a breast cancer survivor as well and i follow her example in how she deals.

can't get too caught up in it or you won't enjoy it.

if it helps... i would rather go quickly and tragically (at an old codger's age!) than slowly and painfully.
