You'll say I'm an idiot for even asking...
« on: February 07, 2008, 08:31:20 PM »
Background:  Just this morning the wife was crying to me about expenses and paying down our debt.  She handles the money, and it got a bit pressured lately (though we aren't in any real distress or trouble, thank G-d) .  She was pretty stressed.  I take it in stride; we always come through with a little hard work and perseverance.  She has a very good job, and I just started another one; so we'll get it in hand pretty quickly.

This evening she comes into my study, and watches part of the Triumph race film with me on the internet.  Then she says, "hey, do you want a Norton Commando?"  I almost fell out of my chair.  She doesn't ask things like that theoretically.  "But just this morning you were telling me how tight expenses have gotten.  Besides, what are we doing-opening a motorcycle museum?  I still have to get that old Triumph out at Stan's running and home."  "I know", she says "but one of my patients said he knows you like classic bikes and he wants to sell his Norton.  I told him you might be interested."

 :o

Should I call the guy?  I have three bikes under covers in the snow right now.  The only bike in the garage is the wife's.  I don't know how she thinks we should do this, financially or space-wise.  Of course, I'm stupid for asking you lot for advice... ::)

I have to say, I do have a gem of a woman... ;D

Meanwhile, she just told me she thinks the guy isn't even local.  Apparently he's a contractor from Texas.  That would get me off the hook.

"Price is right" is not the same than "price is a bargain". I like classic brit bikes, but I wouldn't have one. Sure you have plenty of spares -either original or reproductions-, but at a high price and you will have to pay them in sterling pounds.

You can always buy a Commando at market price, so if you don't have disposable income now, you may be better of staying aside. After all, you already have classic bikes. If the price was a bargain that would be different, but if it is just right then I wouldn't buy it. I read the classifieds almost everyday and see plenty of bikes I wouldn't mind to own, but at market price they pop up every day.

Leave the bike take her to dinner. Bikes like that you'll find very day. A wife like that once in a lifetime (maybe)

I've seen the occasional bargain come and go (for other people...).
If the price is indeed "right", get it and ride it home.  When you get feeble like me, you'll appreciate the memories of when     you

Get the bike !
Cost is not a dominant factor here.
A door has opened and an opportunity to enlarge the stable has arrived.
Man, you've got "buy in".

However, should you decide to pass it up, I would gladly sell a kidney for this bike!

And yeah - your wife is what I'd classify as a "keeper"!!!!!!!!

Doc,

I'm jealous! A Triumph and now maybe a Norton! Two of my favorites (including my 750F3)! Wow!!!
And a wife and/or girlfriend that allows it! Wow again...

Interesting.  I had something similar happen to me with my wife back in November.  One of her clients got in some legal troubles and needed money to pay his fines and lawyer fees.  He saw a pic of me on my bike on my wife's desk and asked about it.  He told her that he was seeling his Norton Commando 850 and was wondering if I might be interested.  She came home and asked me if I was.  I said of course, how much does he want.  She didn't know, but gave me his number.  She said, how much could it be? (thinking that a vintage Norton was similar in price to a vintage CB that I bought).  I explained to her that it was most likely five times what I paid for the CB.

Knowing that in the future I would regret not calling the guy, I made the call.  He invited me over to have a look.  The bike was flawless with LOW miles!  I knew at that moment it was going to sell for big money.  He also knew that and already had an offer for $7000.  I returned home and my wife said, did you buy it.  I said no, he already had an offer.  Now, I wish I never went to look at that bike because I really wanted it.

I think Sparty has convinced me.  Unless this guy were a bigger idiot than me (and THAT'S unlilkely!), he knows it will be worth a few bucks.  Why torture myself?  As it is, wife thinks the bike is out of state.

And I have to say, a 30 year old Norton would be much better looking than that new one in the pic; and my old woman is a lot better looking (to me) than that young chick in the pic.

(Wife didn't like having her pic up; she's modest that way.)
