Speedometer Cable Removal
« on: February 11, 2008, 01:28:12 PM »

I've got a '72 CB750 My speedometer cable recently broke and the flathead screw on the front wheel to remove it was completely stripped.  I've tried to drill it out (after trying everything I knew how to get the screw out..I swear!  Who wants to re-tap a hole?) but the cable still will not pull out.

My questions is, is this the only screw to remove, or is there something else I have to do?  If it is the only screw I think I maybe just need to drill a little more, maybe deeper and wider to make sure I got the whole screw.

Any help is appreciated, thanks,
Jon-Marc

It's the only screw you need to remove to be able to pull the cable end out. I don't know what it is, but these are hard to remove even after being in only a short time and no overtightening.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

JMH...I had the same thing as the previous owner must have torqued mine in real tight.  I ended up even breaking an easy-out off trying to get mine out.  What ended up working for me was this...I took a small circular cutter on my Dremel and made a cut in the screw head.  I then took an impact wrench and it came out with the first hit.  Good luck with it...

I feel your pain >:( .... I ended up having to remove the front wheel and axle on my CB650 so that i could simply replace it with the speedo from my parts bike.  I've still got the busted one hanging above my door as a reminder.

At least i'm not the only one... comfort in numbers right ;D

Dito what Johnie said.  Drimil tool with a cut wheel to make a slot and then an impact wrench on two of my bikes.
