Oil in alternator cover
« on: August 04, 2005, 03:08:30 AM »
Hi everybody - I've been fortunate? enough to have laid my hands on a '78 CB750 F2 to complement my '74 CB550. The bike had languished for around 7 years in a shed before I got it and so I've embarked upon a complete restoration to hopefully bring it back to it's  former glory. Now, the alternator cover has a rather nasty hole/repair job in it so decided to take it off for closer inspection... a reasonable amount of oil greeted me upon it's removal. Logic tells me this is not a good thing (electrical & oil should not mix?!). I fear an engine strip down is in order to remedy a leaking seal? Any input would be appreciated....

That's normal, the oil comes out a small hole in the crank, behind the stator, to oil the starter gear, the oil then drains back into the motor via a hole in the crankcase below the stator.
Oil won't hurt the windings

hi
alot of old transphormers where encased in oil as a way to get the heat out of the windings normal electrical varnish of the period of our bikes is impervious to it and oil is also a electrical insulator although a good heat transphering agent its the fancy adatives they put in it now that can cause a problem
