Garage Envy
« on: February 10, 2008, 08:09:39 PM »
Through pics some of you have posted, I have seen your garages, and I must say that i am jealous as hell.
When I bought my house... Unfortunatly, I totally under estimated how much time I would spend in there.
My garage is a dank, brick, miserable S$%#hole compared to the "Knottypine" enclosed, climate controlled, fortresses of solitude I've seen here.

I salute you...(raise my beverage!) owners of Kick ass garages!

Welcome to "Pimp My Garage".  This is a thread where we(I hope I'll get some help)will give you the advice you need to un-dank-a-fi, climatize, and knotify your Batcave.  What we'll need is a picture or 2, the electrical that is currently installed, and what you would like to have in the room.

Is there a specific thread I am missing?  I just got a rendering of a major makover for my house, including a 2200 sqft garage!  Where are the other posts?

Burke,

Word of warning.
Quite afew years ago, I had a dank garage up in Michigan.
One of my prized machines froze solid--engine stuck--major problem.
Cost me some money.
I'd say start your machines throughout the winter or check that they still turn over.

Dry heat and light will just about eliminate dankness, I would settle for a muddy hole in the ground down stream from dairy farm than to go another day without a garage.  I sure miss my shed, so does Carl

gerhed, youre right. I don't store my bikes there in the winter. My HD is in my Brothers house, my 73' is in my basement for the winter. Unfortunatly the 77' bought in Dec, is in there :-[
I attached a pic of my garage taken last summer.

due to my lot size expantion is not an option. Its brick in the front (damp city) and the rear area is wood (leakytown), the wood part I plan to rebuild this summer and run and install a box (electric, the PO just had a 110 running from the house  :'()
Anyway I think the only true solution is to move.

I have only lived here 3 years. The house was sort of a fixerupper, I added a room, complete new roof, new floors in the living area, and I still have to tackle the bedroom and the front porch which is raising.
And everyone knows that all summers are perfect and last forever in MIchigan, so I should have plenty-O-time next year right? ;)

A paint-like product for the cinderblock called UGL will help with damp city.  And then I would find a deal on a small wood stove come summertime.

When you say "raising", do you mean that the earth is rejecting the porch and is pushing it out?

Yes. the end, closest to the house is being forced up. which normally would not be a big deal but, whoever put the T1 around the house, rest the T1 on the porch. So it's buckeling my T1. So not only do I have level the porch but replace that section of T1.

A garage is where you store your bikes.

A shop is where you work on your bikes...

A shed is where you store your mower and weed trimmer.

You limeys always confuse that Sam.... :D

I think everyone should have all three of the above.

I had a decent garage in my first house and then moved to a larger home on a larger lot with less garage.  This was not a home we planned to stay for more then a 2 years, so projects and things got put on hold.  We're now in the process of renovating a home we plan on staying, so the garage edition is finnaly happening.  The existing oversized 2 car will be for the wife, and the lager garage is to be for projects and storage.  Here is the rendering I mentioned earlier.

I'd like a garage. but I'd like 2200 square feet worth of it, and 2 bedrooms and bathrooms.  hell I'd LIVE in the freakin garage as long as there's heat and running water to a bathroom. (hot water required)

But nothing...There's 2200 sqft of garage on the far side.  None of which will be cluttered by living space. ;D

I finally convinced my wife that we need to build a new large shed, strictly dedicated to my bike pursuits! What won her over was the fact that my biker buddy (whom I have known since we were kids) is very good at carpentry, and he has offered to help me build this baby for cost of materials only.

I am looking at a space of around 15' x 21' or so. Although it won't have a poured concrete foundation, it will be very well supported. In addition to a conventional framed door, I hope to manage to budget in double barn doors to enable easy rolling in and out of bikes. I would love to have a garage type door, but that blows the hell out of my estimate!

Pics to follow, but it will be awhile until we get this built.
