K2 gauges, converting later units?
« on: February 15, 2008, 02:57:54 PM »
I have a K2 CB750 that had later model gauges and a bracket hashed onto the original triple clamp.  I've had the triple clamp repaired, but am now left with trying to source K2 gauges.  The units on the bike were repro, but quite presentable.  If I buy a pair of K2 bases, and mounting rubbers, can I modify the later style units to fit?

I imagine if I cut off the threaded posts they K2 backs may fit on?  Does anyone know if this will work, or has anyone tried it?

IIRC, the only thing that functionally changed between the 750K0-K5 gauges was the mounting screws and their angles (or positions). All the drive ratios stayed the same. The angle of the cable exits changed a bit on the different models, and the K0/K1 units had the OIL, FLASH, NEUT, and BEAM lamps embedded in the gauges. But, they all worked the same, if you could fit them up. Prior to 1972, finding stock to repair damaged bikes was a tough deal, as Honda had a hard time making enough bikes, let alone spare parts.

You may find that changing the silver rear cover will present the proper mounting holes and angles to almost any of the 750K series gauges.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Other than the differences listed by hondaman......

The K2 is different then the follow up models (K3 and up) in the following regard.....

The K2 and below ....the drive angle is external while the K3 and up is all integrated into the case.

K2 has the tripometer above the needle while the odometer is below...on the later gauges this is reversed.

K2 and below has the tripometer reset knob exiting through the back of the case while the later ones exit on the side.

K2 bottom half of the case (below the chrome ring) is markedly thinner than the later gauge.

K2 chrome trim piece  is different...more a cone on the back with the exit for the trip reset.

As you know the K2 and below mounted with a band while the later ones bolt on.
