This was true until about the late 80's I bet.
I went to grade school in the 60's and high school till 75.
We all carried guns and knives to school.
I won a Marlin 120 trap pump,
and a Marlin Gold Triggered 22 lever action,
and a Bowie knife.

All presented to me in Ag class while at School.

It would be funny TT if it wasn't so true. I was on my local School Board for 6 years, the Political Correctness drove me nuts. Rock here in People's Republic of NY they would rather find Hustler in a kid's backpack than the American Rifleman.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Sadly Bobby, that's probably bout anywhere in the States now-a-days.

Oh yea TT, I had my butt paddle a bit in school, it isn't what screwed me up psychologically though.  ;D ;D ;D

being a child of the 60's i can say that when you had a fight , when it was finished it was finished
you did not have to worry abou a knife or gun afterwards

That was true unless it took more than one opponent to best you.  Still didn't have to worry about guns/knives.  Just a wait for each to have his helpers elsewhere.

Never had my butt paddled at school.  Teachers knew that would be handled at home with a simple parental report.

We had a teacher in 6th grade (1965), Mr. Lobosco. If he felt you were disruptive, he would call you up to his desk in front of the class and ask you to put your hand on his desk. When you did so he would pull a hammer out of his desk drawer and slam it down on the desk real close to your hand. He eventually changed jobs, and worked as a guidance counsellor with my mom. I could never understand that even then.

WHere I live, this did not happen till probably mid 90s. Started in large cities fisrt as just one more why for people to not claim responsibility for their actions. It is probably a good thing I am not in politics. I would do too much $4it stirring.

For some stupid reason I never understood, kids made paddles for teachers in shop.  Drilled and taped.  Mrs Kuhlman even had one and when she pulled it out and whacked it down on her big wood desk, it was like a howitzer going off.

Guns just weren't around, really.   No cars had aerials because kids stole them to make zip guns.  Those things worked, too (a lot of the time, anyway...)

:-\ That does show how times have changed TT.  In the late '60s, my buddy and I regularly rode our bicycles through our small town out to the country with our .22s balanced across the handlebars. Everyone knew that was fine as long as the guns weren't loaded.
And the barbershop was a mens' place with hockey and hunting posters on the wall where we boys could look at girly magazines (tame by todays standards) and the older fellows ignored us doing so because thats what guys did.
I was surprised though that my sons' early season football tryouts last year were tough enough that a few kids puked their guts out with the exertion each practice. I expect he will be telling his kids about the good old days some year..

That is so true! :-\ Junior High was where I started having trouble in school. It was such a sudden change, they took away my recess and sent me to a different room for each class! ::) Didn't do too good from then on (7th grade was the worst one for me). One day, during lunch, ( for some reason) I got the bright idea to take a hardened piece of bubble gum (that I'd broke loose from under the table) and try to toss it across the cafeteria to land in a girls lunch sack. ::) ::) I was amazed when it dropped right in. :o :D And then, I saw Coach Protova looking at me. Next thing I knew, we were out in the hall (along with most of the kids at lunch) Then, he produced "Mr. CW" (a paddle made out of Cherry Wood w/ 13 holes drilled in it. Now  Mr CW had a reputation at our school. Now, I wasn't a very big kid ( a little over 5' and probably not much over 100lbs) but coach only got ONE lick in and Mr. CW was in TWO pieces! ;D
The coach was shocked (as was I) and let me go. Things were different from then on. :)

I had Nuns as Teachers until the 3rd grade. They would beat you half to death in Jesus's name and get away with it.  Luckily, my old man had been a Protestant growing up so he yanked me out of there.

Funny yes, but very true. And very sad!

I got paddled probably about until the 3rd grade about 1960. Didn't happen much but it did happen. I got the 2nd paddling when I got home and it was worse. Usually the dreaded belt. I learned how not to get paddled - stay the hell out of trouble!! My daughter is almost 11 now. She seems to take after me (good and bad) and it worked just about the same for her except she has never seen a home made paddle with holes drilled, just heard about them. Nor has she ever had the BIG belt my dad used for my 2nd paddling. A 1 gallon paint stick worked wonders. Just a little zinger or two. Hurt her feelings more than anything. She messed with her kindergarten & first grade teachers (kinda funny actually but I couldn't laugh in front of her) and I had to play the part of the stern dad. When she started in the second grade I explained what an accomplishment that was and the responsibility that comes with it. AND I pulled out the second grade paddle - a 5 gallon paint stick and placed in in the family room where she could see it as a reminder. You should have seen how big her eyes got. It's still there and has never been used! One day a few years later while shopping at Home Depot I threw a few more 5 gallon sticks in the bottom of the cart. She wanted to do the self check out herself. When she got to the bottom of the cart and saw those paint sticks she jumped back and her eyes bugged out just like the first time. Lesson learned and I laughed my ass off!

Its a shame things aint like that now.   I think its why kids do half the stupid $h!t they do, and get away with it.

and all of that is ENTIRELY too true.

it angers me to see that we're in such a scared and weak world anymore.

mom and dad are afraid to use physical punishments because it "could screw up their kid" or put them in jail.    as a kid, I never got a single whack I didnt deserve.  it didnt screw me up, it made me understand there are consequences for your actions.

Ah...I remember the paint stick well, as well as the wooden spoon.  I deserved every whack I got, but I am far better for it.  As I got to the age of 8 or nine, I learned to avoid them.  Now I look at my sisters kids and her "time out" parenting, and wonder when it's time for paint stick.  One or two times, and all of her kids would be much better behaved.

Wasn't it just BETTER back in 1957?

I mean, who wouldn't want to live in a society that was in rabid fear of communism, that was repressed sexually and philosophically, and which prevented certain citizens from going places and doing things simply because of the color of their skin?

I call shenanigans.  The "good ole days" dream may be happy, but it's still just a dream.  Things were bad back then, things are bad now, things will be bad in the future.  It's just which "bad" things go away because of progress and which "bad" things appear anew because of that progress.

Geeze, I remember 1957, it was when the Nuns were beating obedience into us. Things were simpler then and since I have older cousins. I person with a good pair of hands and limited education could get a job and raise a family. At first I was going to suggest Prozac for that rosy outlook. Then I realized that from my reading over the years, things always sucked no matter what the era, you just make the best of it. Oh yeah, and then you die, which may or may not suck.
