Where to get these o-rings?
« on: February 12, 2008, 10:11:49 AM »
Hey guys I am in need of some o-rings and cant seem to find them anywhere.  They are the little rings that go between the cylinder and the cylinder heads for the oil.

1978 honda cb550k1
Here are the part #'s.

    O-RING (4.9X2.5)
91301-426-010  (replaces 91301-323-000)

My local shop has to have an order of at least $50 and cant order them until I reach that point.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
jay

servicehonda shows them for $1.24 each. Shipping is usually faster than if I go to my local dealer. Never heard of a Honda dealer having a minimum on parts orders, are you trying to order from a general bike shop?
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

O-rings can be ordered from bearing shops too. As you said, there is usually a minimum amount, but the price is so cheap that many times beats the OEM + gas or shipping. It doesn't have to be really identical, as long as the thickness is, because if it is slightly smaller in diameter it can always stretch.

Anyway, I resort to o-ring shops when there is no OEM available. I don't mind paying the price of a rebuild every 20 years or so....

It is the company that he orders from that has to have a minimum $50 order.  He said he has a few other things to throw on there.  His price was like .50 a piece and no shipping but they are the only things keeping me from putting the motor back together so I would like to have them soon.  A little nervous to see if the motor runs seeing as this is my first motor rebuild/restore ever.  I am really excited to get it back together and give it a shot.

Sorry buddy, you clearly said $50. I understood you had to buy a 50-pack minimum. Go to OEM Honda, you can't go wrong with that and the time spent is well worth the money. I'm willing to bet they can get them, there's no o-ring or oil seal that I've ordered from my local dealer that they have been unable to deliver.

Not a problem.  I am going by to talk to the guy this afternoon and see what he says.

Just get an 'O' ring that fits.
It will only last a year at best, even if its genuine Honda
The main problem with 550 (and 500) is the ring isn't supported, gets hard from hot oil then gives the infamous weep. ( fix it when its 3 fins down from top ;D)
Best thing to do is get head/block counter bored next time and fit a slightly larger diameter 'O' ring and a dowel to prevent it distorting.
It cures ALL the cylinfder head/block oil leak problem on 500/550
