Topic: whats YOUR favorite cold remedy?

as i sit here with a king hell cold i thought i'd get some of your favorite cold remedies. i'll start with mine. big doses of vitamin c, several cloves of fresh garlic a day, wild turkey 101 and copious amounts of budweiser. dont know if it helps the cold or makes me not give a damn but it works for me.

Garlic soup, beef broth and enough "SEVERE COLD FORMULA" (any brand) to zonk me out for 10-12 hrs at a time.

Lots of rum. 'Capitain Morgan' is my favorite. It does nothing with the cold but after half a bottle I no longer care.

I like Hot Toddies.  But, because of the dehydration effect of alcohol, drink plenty of other fluids, too.  Water is quite good for you on its own.

rum (or Brandy Or...), dash of lemon juice, honey (or sugar), some cinnamon or nutmeg, and water in a 12 oz cup.  Hot seems best.
Lemon juice and honey are preferred for a sore throat.

I always take a gram of Vit C per day.  None of my immediate family are heavy drinkers.  So, our alcohol tolerance is quite low.  One or two toddies put us away for several hours.  Sudafed or it's generic helps keep the sinuses open, as does Otrivin which you can get in combo with saline so that you don't overly dry out while sleeping.

Asprin or tylenol takes the ache away.  And, if I can breathe through my nose I can function ok.  The Toddies are for when I'm done for the day.

Caffeine enhances mucus production.  So, avoid caffiene drinks while dealing with a cold.

Zicam nose gel spray. Once I feel that I have one starting I will spray once ro maybe another time in 12 hours. I haven't had a cold in over 3 years!

Full dose of Ny-quil at night to let me sleep, and 1/2 doses throughout the day to keep my nose, throat and head clear.  Sure, it makes me a little bit groggy at work, but much better than without, and I can't take any of the "daytime" cold remedies because they all tend to have some form of ephedrine which increases my heart rate and makes me all jittery and sweaty.

I'm with Lloyd on this one, hot toddy and bed. I don't want to tempt fate but I only have a cold once a year, usually 3 weeks before Christmas   but there is nothing to say you can't  have a hot toddy anytime.

My favorite remedy is the following drink.  I make it in 1 Quart Nalgene jars.

1 Qt boiling H20
1 Squeezed lemon
1 equal part maple syrup to lemon
1/8 tsp cayenne (easy on the cayenne)


It's a little spicy but not too bad, it clears you sinuses and helps the throat, and helps with the positive mood.

Cold MD is a relatively new product that works pretty good.  If it's a sinus thing, Tylenol Sinus.  And Thai mushroom soup does good.  Plenty of water and rest.

Yeah.  I donated my brain to someone who could use it.







OK- that wasn't nice.  I had about 6 anesthesias over the course of a couple of years and it shoots big holes in your brain pan.  Like a rusty colander- only tthe really big pieces stay in there.  Fortuneately, my friends don't get upset when I don't remember who they are.
Anyway- I had a semi-experimental kidney and pancreas transplant.  A lot of doctors are surprised when they hear that.  Had diabetes for 37 years, which is a big cause of kidney failure. 
The other thngs- well, I have a medical history.

I hiss and spit at sick people whenever they come around with there sniffling, coughing and wheezing. Nose picking is a good way to catch a cold, most folks don't think to wash hands before dredging for skull emeralds.

I usually use REALLY hot showers for sinuses.  the steam has a really helpful feeling that breaks up the congestion and actually lets your sinuses work as they should.   99% of my problems are related to such as well so yeah.

I've been on and off sick for about 3 weeks now with some sinus/head cold.  Not enough to keep me home, but enough to make me miserable.  It had just started clearing up (with the help of my wife, my first ever Tottie, and tons of clear, non-carbonated, non-caffinated) and the wife went down hard with a chest cold, complete with head congestion, coughy, achy, don't let me sleep throught the night medicine.  Today is her first day back to work this week and the only thing that worked at all for her was sleep, sleep, some Advil cold/Sinus, Zicam, and more sleep. 

Good luck.  The difference between a rough cold and the Flu seems to be getting less clear lately.

My favorite remedy is tincture of ganja, chicken noodle soup, and lots of rest.
But it's been years since i had any really good THC tincture.

Although in a pinch, hash brownies suffice.
Or even hash ice cream.
Actually anything with either a fat, or alcohol in the recipe can include THC.... 
If you know how.


Since i have sobered up....... i just suffer with just chicken noodle soup, mabey some robitussin if I cannot sleep.

I use to have Ginger in the morning and Brandy in the evening   You are so tired from all the shagging that you sleep like a baby.  Then you wake up and feel like new.  Boy I miss my college days.

I'm with Soos except add some (lots) of rum or whiskey. It'll make you forget about whatever it was for the short term. You're gonna feel like #$%* anyway so you may as well enjoy it the best you can. If you're really insistent, treat the symptoms (since you can't kill the bug with medication) until it goes away. 1 week or 7 days whichever occurs first usually.

Antihistamines such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine-most drowsiness) or Zyrtec or Claritin (least drowsiness and perhaps less effective) for runny nose & sneezing. Plus they dry up sinus drainage that makes your throat raw. There are numerous antihistamines in between these also.

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine-still available behind the counter due to the meth/crank heads) or Sudafed PE (phenylephrine-less effective) to open up the stuffy/congested nose and sinus. These may keep you awake at night, increase heart rate and blood pressure however. Read the box warnings on antihistamines and decongestants pertaining to potential problems with diabetes, prostate, blood pressure, thyroid, glaucoma, etc. You can always use a nasal spray for congestion whether oxymetazolone or saline. Either of these are much safer if there are side effect considerations that need to be heeded with saline being the safest.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) for fever and pain. 

Robitussin (guiaifenesin) to thin out the secretions of chest congestion so it can be coughed up or Robitussin DM with the added dextromethorphan for chest congestion with a BAD cough. The DM can stop a mild productive cough that brings up the phlegm so only get that if you just can't live with that damn bad ass (pharmaceutical term) cough any longer.

Whiskey or Rum as stated earlier.

A lot more sleep than you have been getting.

Lots of fluids.

Heed this advice. AND, don't bug your pharmacist at the present time about your whiney ass cold. He is probably sick as a dog from trying to treat everyone else. Plus he is working his ass off trying to deal with this damn flu epidemic. Your cold is sissy anyway compared to the flu.

It's lipid soluble... a + for cooking with it, a - because trace amts are in your fat for awhile.

I wonder if, (in theory) it could be cooked into chicken noodle soup? 

I use zycam, but after a day or two of a rough one, it feels like squirting battery acid into your sinuses.  I like tylenol and jaegermeister chased with soda. pepsi or coke.  I'm currently down with a nasty cold that turned into a sinus infection.

This really pizzes me off. I went in to a Walmart and while I was there I wanted some Sudafed to clear up a Sinus headache. I had to show more ID for 30 Tabs than I needed to buy a Pistol. They already know the chemical is bought from offshore Pharma houses by the pound. There is not enough Sudafed in the store to cook up much of anything. The other crap they pawn off on you is Neo Synephrine in a pill and is useless.  Read my quote below.

jalepino juice works wonders. drink as much as you can handle, clears up the sinus cavities, and burns out the cold pretty quickly. anything spicy hot works good, but jalepino juice works best for me.
 
 Also, that and franks red-hot works better as a pick-me-up than coffee, cools you down in the summer, but makes you more sensitive to cold in the winter.

 Only time I get a cold is when I go for a while without eating spicy foods, otherwise I'm cold free.
