Okay, bear with me.

Please define "mods vs rods"

I think I know, but I am pretty much in the dark on this scene.

I'm gonna guess modified vs. completely redone (or bolt on vs weld and drill if you prefer).

I think mods is just that,  mods and nothing else.  a rod, is probably an all out machine that SHOWS its modified, and looks good to boot.

think like a nice classic  Bel Air with the big ol tires on the back, nice paintjob, a lovely 454 bigblock under the hood and some performance. in my opinion, this is a rod,

a MOD, to me, is just your essentially stock car, such as say, an earlier mustang with a stock look, and some bolt on stuff under the hood, like cams, heads exhaust, etc

Mod -Modification or modified.  Not to be confused with mods like the English suit/parka wearing, pill taking, scooter driving group of people that came about in the 60s.

Rod -Hot rod.  Or connecting rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft.

Along those lines, traditionally a hot-rod was a modified car model year 1949 or before, and called a "Custom" or "Street Machine" for models newer than that.  All these lines are being blurred these days, though.

Interesting OFG.  I didn't know that the year had any bearing on what it's called.  I got curious about where the term "hot rod" came from.  Wikipedia doesn't know for sure, but has a couple ideas:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_rod
