« on: February 13, 2008, 11:54:28 AM »
I am just about to fit a Scottoiler to my bike.  Has anyone else done this and have any advice and/or pictures?

They were a great idea in the 1970's when we had crap chains and lube, but unless you're gonna ride it around the world, probably unnecessary nowadays. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Great for long distance or everyday use, particularly in the UK.  Even on o-ring chains.  The types I've used in the past operate from the carb vacuum.  Obviously we all have our opinions about this, but after several years of boiling reynolds chains in Linklife along came the o-ring chain, with recommendations to keep it lightly oiled externally.  I know that the oil gets flung off onto the back wheel, but so does all the grit.

I've never tried an O ring chain, are they really that good?  They seem very expensive at twice the price.  Do they last twice as long?

What type of chain to use is just as personal a decision as what type of engine oil to use, and the reasons for using any particular type are filled with just as much controversy, hearsay and personal opinion, too.

Do a search for "o-ring chain", and see for yourself.

Jeez, where's Nick?  This topic was made for him!

Florence,
you might try PM'ing nickjtc.  He's an avid supporter of the Scottoiler and can probably answer any of your questions.
