PETCOCKS AND LEAKY GAS TANK
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:23:57 AM »
hey everyone!  i think i may need a little help with this problem here.

i was sanding my amen frame and the gas tank is frenched in to the frame.  lo and behold she leaks.

i am unfamiliar with these coatings that you apply.  i hear redcote is the best.  kreem the worst, por 15 good.  i will have to apply this stuff and turn my whole frame around by hand, cause  i wont be able to take the tank off, i am a big guy no problem hopefully, but my question is how does this work??  Do you have to take the petcocks out??  If so can I get replacements or what??  I never bought any and dont know nothing about them.  I know I can turn the gas off and on.  So is there universal threads for these??  How do they come??  Seems like they just screw in and there is sealer around the threads.

here is the petcocks, i have no idea the brand.  i was looking at JP cycles and the red switches look like they are Accel type, but i am just guessing.  Anyone familiar with my problems at all please help.
THANKS
Curt

a lot depends on the leak, some leaks demand a real repair, not a coating.
Quick weld or solder does wonders.

Yes, best to take the petcocks out, replace them with plugs or caps Otherwise you'll have to remove them to clear them out anyway.

"Seal-All" worked for the pinholes I had after I put toilet bowl cleaner in my tank.  To be fair, I haven't filled the tank up fully but all the holes were on the bottom...  Cheap fix and probably worth a try.

those petcocks are generic custom style, they appear to have quarter pipe threads on them, they should just screw right out and you can buy male plugs at the hardware store to plug the holes.

Hey thanks for the replies on this one.  So i guess there is like suretack or pipe DOPE around the threads there.  what would be best to put them back with?  Id like to get new ones.  these here are a little rusty and hard to turn even sprayed with WD 40.   I guess when i get the plugs ill take em with me and make sure i get the correct thread measurement so I know what I am getting.

So like I am still not sure of this plugging procedure.  I can look into the tank with a flashlight and I can see i guess they are called BUNGS where the petcocks screw into.  So like when we say plugs are we talking rubber plugs?  or screw plugs?  And how deep should they go into the BUNGS?  I am concerned with when i use whatever tank coat method, the plugs might interfere with proper sealing of the tank cote when I remove them.

you shouldnt have any issues, the pipe plugs dont go very far into the tank.
